@1thousandfaces_ I noticed nothing beyond wakefullness and fucking with my smell. Maybe the people who find benefit from it are just chronically sleep deprived and conflate that with adhd

modafinil hype is kind of fake imho. feels like a more “flat” general energy boost than doing anything meaningful for focus. for me its best as an antidepressant; everything that it does for adhd, actual stimulants (amphetamines) do better

I’m 90% sure half the people talking about “gen z” on this app are actually Gen Z but don’t realize

@bryancsk I think its any shared expectation not just social expectations, but also yeah this is more so an attempt to model why humor is evolutionarily / socially useful than an idea which would be able to predict if something is funny

@pidud_ You can breach on nudge the boundary of social acceptability without being funny, and you can be funny while being perfectly kosher and within the bounds of polite society. This theory does not work

@bryancsk This applies socially, like showing the boundaries of social acceptability, but also in wordplay, showing the boundaries of shared language, and physical comedy, the boundary of our expectations of physics

@bryancsk Basically my thought is humor is socially signaling a shared world model by demonstrating you know where the boundaries are

Since this went somewhat viral, consider some other movies made in 1970s-80s with intriguing and evocative filming locations which would be very tough, if not impossible, to get permission for today: -The Exorcist (intro sequence set in Mosul, Iraq) -Gorillas in the Mist (shot in Volcanoes National Park, Rwanda) -The Bounty (shot in Tahiti) -Spy Who Loved Me (Giza Pyramids sequence) -Octopussy (sequences at heritage sites in India) -Aguirre the Wrath of God (Peruvian Amazon + Machu Picchu) -Caravans (Hollywood adventure story, shot entirely in Iran) I'm sure there are many other examples. Today when we see "exotic landscapes" in movies and Netflix slop, we're basically seeing Iceland/Morocco/Jordan/Thailand over and over from various angles.

The fact that "The Last Emperor" was even allowed to be made is a historical miracle, an absolute miracle. It could never have been more before that point, and it could never be made today. The Deng government gave Bertolucci and his Western film crew control of the Forbidden City for 2 months! You think Xi is giving Christopher Nolan or Denis Villenueve the entire Forbidden City for 2 months? Plus, there's a climactic sequence of the movie openly critical of the Cultural Revolution, and the Deng govt was OK with this. It probably helped that Bertolucci was "Communist but also cmon lets get real finally" in way that matched Deng Thought.

I am so sorry for posting furry stuff on main, but I’ve been wanting to have a fursuit since I was a little kid. @SymphonTail did such an amazing job making my suit real. I'm so excited and so happy.

@adesertdryad There’s also the cost of access to a kitchen, something we don’t think about much now since its 99% of homes in America have a kitchen by default, but that comes with an implicit cost absorbed by housing costs

the “do poor eat preprepared food or make it themselves” question has almost always been about the relative cost of cooking fuel/equipment to labor labor is more expensive than natural gas so you save money cooking for yourself vs hiring someone to do it for you
