The United States has a recession every 4 to 7 years and that is because capitalism can't operate under its own weight. However countries like Cuba can be under sanctions, embargos and blockades while surviving 65 years of it. It seems to me that if the US was subject to the same conditions as Cuba, this country would collapse within weeks. This 65-year stress test shows that Cuba is the superior country with the superior system. This is why the US officials want to bring it down because that would signal to us that if Cuba is successful, then we would want to copy an economic system similar to theirs. The US regime is persecuting Cubans out of fear because they do not want us to liberate ourselves just like they have.

JFK was likely issuing a veiled threat against Diefenbaker in this speech in the very next line: “Those whom nature hath so joined together, let no man put asunder.” Kennedy likely saw Diefenbaker as the man “putting asunder” the countries that were “joined together.” Diefenbaker was firm about Canadian sovereignty and pursuing an independent foreign policy. Diefenbaker wanted to ensure that the placement of US nuclear weapons on Canadian soil was actually in the defence interests of Canada. Another irritant was that Diefenbaker did not want to join the Organisation of American States. Kennedy later challenged the very sovereignty of Canada to make its own defence and foreign policy decisions. He went so far as to send pollsters and strategists to Canada with fake passports to help Lester Pearson’s campaign. American pollster Louis Harris claims that toppling Diefenbaker was the proudest moment of his career. Anytime this Kennedy speech is quoted to romanticise some fair and equal partnership between Canada and the US, I can’t help but laugh. Kennedy was taking a shot at Canada’s Prime Minister and our sovereignty in this very speech. This was a speech about domination, dressed in the language of friendship.

For the record. Canadian investors should ignore the partisan noise and performative outrage surrounding the current U.S. administration; what matters for Canada is policy, not personality, and the hard facts are that our economy, our security and our markets are still inextricably tied to the United States. As John F. Kennedy reminded Parliament in 1961, ‘Geography has made us neighbours. History has made us friends. Economics has made us partners. And necessity has made us allies.’ For investors, that enduring reality matters far more than the latest viral clip or talking point.

Municipalities will charge 2x the median income in just taxes for new housing. Development charges have simply become out of control. It’s time for a new contract between municipalities and the province for long term infrastructure financing.

Eric Lombardi just gets it: Provinces need to stop offloading their fiscal burdens to municipalities. Municipalities need revenue, and decades of provincial cuts and underfunding have forced them to use the only tools at their disposal.

Bank of Canada: "We need house prices to come down, so that housing is more affordable." How many politicians have the guts to say this? So far, few. Remember, most Canadians would be ok with home prices coming down. Let's normalize this narrative. x.com/SteveSaretsky/…
