@empresshila @Jesse_Leg I mean, to be fair, the other democrats candidates would support the billionaire tax put out there by Ro Khanna, the very possibility of which has driven out quite a few billionaires already. So I’d say they’re just investing in someone who would give them a reason to stay?
English

@pj_millz @Jesse_Leg 🙄25 Billionaires r bankrolling Mahan. They’ve proven they know how to hoard💰, so I’m sure they expect a return, a Palantir puppet?
English

Part of what makes me so pessimistic about the future of the Democratic Party is that this Mahan guy isn’t consistently polling orders of magnitude higher than people like Porter or Becerra.
He’s quite obviously more articulate and vastly more competent than any of the other Democrats running, and yet, these California liberals seem highly unlikely to elect him.
Instead, they appear poised to go with someone even less capable than Newsom.

Here's @MattMahanSJ, on the lessons — both politics and policy — of trying to cut unsheltered homelessness in San Jose to zero
English

@TannerHaidt @OldRowSwig The map is quite literally based on a book my Colin Woodard little guy
English

@OldRowSwig Talking like this is a great way to sound fucking retarded to anybody who’s ever read a fucking book in their life holy shit. This guy sounds fucking stupid like turbo fucking stupid.
English

@OldRowSwig This was very good. You really need to credit this guy by linking him.

1) This is the initial layer only imo and is highly varied across "nations" in terms of how strongly it predicts the culture. IMO El Norte is his weakest region, and OK is the best example of how using an Anglo-American lens really limits the framework
2) I think it's more visible in towns than in cities tbh through the dialect differences, through the vernacular etc.
3) I think some areas are more highly expressed through the initial layers than others. The second wave of settlers drives regional differences - German, Irish, Basque, Italian etc
3) the black America layer is a very influential layer that took root during the Great Migration and had a variable effect on different areas of the country - som less so, and some very much so
4) Ratio of transplants in a city is inversely proportional to the extent to which these initial layers remain expressed through the culture of a place
English

@pj_millz @OldRowSwig Woodard makes an argument--and sent me sources that claim--that founding cultures continue to dominate, even long after original population turned over and experienced influx from elsewhere. Didn't look into it further though, so not sure how persuaded I am.
English

@gregorbas1 @OldRowSwig Yep - Actually have a video on my account about archetypes of people in a city, and how their mix drives the degree to which the city homegenizes versus keeps its essence. It's a tug of war between preservation and economic growth and sustainability is the objective function imo
English

@pj_millz @OldRowSwig And like you said, @pj_millz, a lot of these fine-grained distinctions Woodard identified are really falling victim to homogenization, especially at the top as Michael Lind argued in this brilliant essay: tabletmag.com/sections/news/…

How many LA residents who lost homes in the '25 fire are currently living in the $1500/night Hotel Bel-Air?
My guess is 2: Spencer and Heidi.
Kevin Dalton@TheKevinDalton
@jonfavs Did he fake the part where Karen Bass burned down his home?
English

@MonicaL91944854 @OldRowSwig I heard 😂 this is the problem when you read a lot without questioning how you pronounce the words in your head
English

@pj_millz @OldRowSwig Very interesting. Gloucester = (GLUH-ster).
English

@KingAnderdingus @OldRowSwig Anywhere that urbanized during the Gilded Age has Queen Victorian architecture aside from Midlands, Deep South, and New Netherland (NYC). So that is actually a good way to know if a place is Appalachian versus Deep South
English

@pj_millz @OldRowSwig And this is Connecticut and California. Is all of that also Greater Appalachia?

English

@KingAnderdingus @OldRowSwig This is Asheville North Carolina. Queen Anne Victorian is featured pretty prominently in the parts of Greater Appalachia that urbanized early on

English

@OldRowSwig Texas is completely wrong. Fredricksburg is an outlier. You won’t find that in Dallas, Houston, San Antonio, Amarillo, El Paso, Lubbock, Brownsville… so on and so forth.
Meanwhile you will find Victorian houses.
Moody Mansion, a home in The Heights, Houston, and East Dallas

English

@BourbonGhost @OldRowSwig I’m from there and to me that is a buffer zone between Appalachia and Deep South. I mapped out Appalachia and landed on this for the “Borderlands”

English

@pj_millz @OldRowSwig The map is just wrong though. Especially North Alabama. The architecture around here is all Deep South, not Appalachia.... but everything else you say in the video feels pretty fair.
English

@pj_millz @OldRowSwig This was great. I see it from my experience. Where do the craftsman movements, and simpler, yet very well made type farm houses fit in?
Do you think the culture fits the same pattern? I've always said the tidewater is old south and extends through Carolinas, but similar otherwise
English

@mariotomich 2-3 months w GLPs. The underlying musculature has changed very very little
English

@miclmiclmtrcycl @OldRowSwig No but seems like I need to start. Only been at this for about 2.5 months
English

@pj_millz @OldRowSwig Do you not post these to your x account?
English

@EngrStudent If only there were already a day designated during the week to unplug. A sabbath, perhaps? No that’s not it. Those old timers didn’t know anything
English

Hear me out...a nationwide internet holiday where the internet shuts down for a day.
This would lower collective anxiety and stress levels by 10% in a day.
- Want to chat with someone? Gotta call them instead of sending them a meme
- Want to listen to music? Play some vinyl
- Want to look at a screen? Read an actual book
- Want to argue with somebody? Meet at a coffee shop and hash it out
- Want to check your email? Nope, nothing new there anyway
- Want to watch Netflix? Sorry, gotta go to a movie theater
- Feel lonely? Grab a pint at your local bar with everyone else
- Need a dopamine boost? Get outside and go on a run
- Hungry for the news? There is none
- Check your stocks? No need pal, stock market is closed
People will say this is impractical, but desperate times call for desperate measures
