New Episode Out, On Today’s Show: Nearly 7,000 probationary employees were terminated in the last 48 hours across the land management agencies and park service. This included researchers at the Missoula Fire Lab, trails crews, biologists, and others. The agencies have yet to communicate on the terminations that have occurred and any actions planned in the future. I have spoken with numerous supervisors and others who provided as much information as they had about what they are seeing and hearing inside the agencies and possible further actions. Primary wildfire positions continue to be exempt. According to sources who understand how the process is proceeding, further actions based on performance evaluations are likely. The decision to lump all probationary employees into this termination action will have downstream effects, and positions critical to wildfire operations, although not primary fire, were removed.

🚨New Episode, On Today’s Show: The Forest Service announced late this afternoon that up to 3,400 non-fire employees will be laid off now that the deferred resignation window is closed. Employees that will remain with the agency include wildland firefighters, law enforcement officers, meteorologists, and bridge inspectors. I have spoken with multiple people who have received employee lists for termination. There have also been high-level resignations today, with the Intermountain Regional Forester Mary Farnsworth announcing her departure. I’ve heard more are expected. These layoffs follow an announcement on February 11th to undertake large-scale reductions in force for employees not mandated by statute.

Your home’s first line of defense against wildfires is Defensible Space. This applies to small yards too. This video breaks down three crucial zones to keep your property safe: • Zone 0 (Ember Resistant Zone): The 0-5 feet around your home, where fire and embers can easily spread. • Zone 1 (Lean and Green Zone): 5-30 feet of clear, fire-resistant space. • Zone 2 (Reduced Fuel Zone): 30-100 feet of carefully spaced vegetation. Don't know where to start? Focus your efforts close to your home and work your way out. Watch now and learn more at: ReadyForWildfire.org #WildfirePreparedness #DefensibleSpace #FireSafety #ProtectYourHome #ReadyForWildfire #WildfirePrevention #Zone0

This week, the week of November 18th, is recognized as National Crash Responder Safety week. As of late September, 28 first responders had been killed by vehicles including law enforcement, fire, EMS, DOT, and tow truck drivers. All of those people had families to go home to but didn't get to and ALL of those incidents were preventable. The State of Colorado has a "Move-Over" law requiring drivers to slo down and move over when approaching emergency vehicles, tow-trucks, or highway maintenance when emergency lights are activated. We unfortunately encounter close calls daily whether we're working on the side of a road or highway or responding to calls. One is one too many.

The Burn Ban for our district (Platte Canyon) has been lifted. Burn Ban restrictions can and do change frequently. Remember to check other areas, including other districts in Park County, for their current status and restrictions. instagram.com/p/DB9KFPOxwFW/…
