Essendon. Man Utd. Investing. Economics. Losing on the field, winning in the markets.

@ScooterMcNeice I agree with best process but was interesting that Hirdy said 'exhaustive' process last night. That's going to make the best candidates reluctant to apply if it's going to be a months long process if they think the result might already be predetermined

I simply want a good process on how we hire a new coach. Thats my wish as a fan.I want the BEST person that can implement a system, develop & build a consistent high level output. There is NO one i count out. Just the process has to be professional & with no internal manipulation

@NatMartin30 After last night the club might as well make him interim senior coach now and see how he goes.

@RonnyLerner Getting to the point where they might as well skip the process, get Hirdy in now for the rest of the season as interim coach and give him the rest of the season to earn the job permanently.

If the well hasn’t been poisoned in the last 20 hours, it’s very close to being the case. If you’re an aspiring first-time coach, why would you enter a process with Hird involved and it looks like a predetermined sham? Moreover, they’d think that if they did in fact win the job, they’ll have to contend with all the undermining and agitation in the background from the Hird supporters who want him back, making it impossible to do their job. For this to occur when there is a Melbourne Cup field of candidates out there makes it all the more embarrassing. Nobody does self-sabotage better than the Bombers!
Ronny Lerner@RonnyLerner

If Essendon even considers James Hird to be their coach again after all this time, it would underscore what a backward dysfunctional organisation it is and its sheer inability to let go of the past. Hird hasn’t coached for 11 years and he didn’t even demonstrate that he had what it took to become a super coach in his time in the job! The Bombers need to stop the obsession with past greats or they will continue to go nowhere. The club has to embrace the future and bring in the best guy for the job who has recently been involved at club land for a lengthy period of time

A long, 'exhaustive' senior coach process isn't going to find the best senior coach for the Bombers. It's just going to recruit Matthew Knights 2.0

@HeathLyons Fair play to him. I think it's reasonable for him to want to see if a change of environment will help get his body right. Hopefully any trade is a win-win

@ScooterMcNeice Unpopular opinion but that's poor from Hirdy. If he wants what's best for the Bombers he shouldn't be part of this process. No other club would even interview him for a senior coaching position with his coaching CV of the last 10 years.

@SwedishRumble Agree. So many people assume it’s better to get the top target first but signing our first midfielder early will give the club a stronger position. Also seem to be prioritising players that are choosing us, get them in early then good the tougher negotiations over the window.

I will make a more comprehensive post on this later — but signing Ederson has the added benefit that it improves our negotiation position in relation to other midfield targets. Simply — negotiations are extremely simple. They are all about ”leverage”. Hence, negotiations are all about selecting when you negotiate and the position you are in when you negotiate. We will never get good deals for Ugarte and Onana because we have zero leverage. We are in a much better position to negotiate a decent deal for Matheus Fernandes because West Ham got relegated which gives us leverage. To be able to enter negotiations when it suits you — you need time and flexibility. We never have either. Newcastle were in a horrible position leverage-wise when they signed Woltemade and Wissa. They had ran out of time. Without Ederson or our first CM signing — pannick is around the corner. The summer will fly by with the World Cup. Any selling club can stall a transfer which just will put more pressure on United. Everyone will try to push us into the same corner Newcastle ended up in last summer. Get in Ederson and Fernandes and everyone wanting to go to MUFC will have to start to think of things from a fear of missing out perspective. From a Tchoumani POV, we have 3 midfielders to sign. He can take his time. If Fernandes and Ederson get done — it’s 1 spot and all it takes is another deal to get done and the door is shut. In this context —
The United Stand@UnitedStandMUFC

🚨 Man Utd's plan to sign a marquee midfielder is not expected to be altered by Ederson's potential arrival. Chiefs at Old Trafford have earmarked significant investment to sign a successor to Casemiro. [@StevenRailston] #MUFC

@MrCricketAust It’d be irresponsible to can the rebuild right now with tassie coming in and the changes to father son and NGA bidding. With Tassie next year and Bewick up for drafting we’ve timed the rebuild well but we have to stay the course.

Media speculating Essendon might have canned the rebuild, I dont think so, I just think the group was not responding to what was asked of them? I'm optimistic we can somewhat emulate what Carlton has done and have the shackles off (if that was a thing) in the short term.

@RonnyLerner Given his CV and coaching experience of the last 10 years would any other AFL club even give him an interview for a senior role?

If he really wanted what’s best for the bombers and still wanted to be senior coach he should’ve embedded himself in the coaching team at a top club these few years. The fact no other AFL club would likely even interview him says he can’t be the man for the senior coach role as much as fans would like it to work out

There’s literally nothing that would make me happier than James Hird returning to coach our next flag to stick it up his detractors but it’s a fantasy. Outside the romance of it, it’s a disaster waiting to happen & I sincerely hope it’s not our plan going forward. Hirdy got hammered pillar to post over his tenure & from a personal standpoint, I just want him to look after himself & don’t put himself through it again

@mitchellnash92 This is one of my fears as well, that they've just buckled to the external pressure. But holding out hope they're basing it on what they see inside the club and fixing something that's not right before it costs us long term.

This might’ve been the start of the downfall, players meeting after round 2 to discuss what the game plan was etc…probably says what you need to know about the coach 🤷‍♂️

@FlightPlanPod I actually don't think waiting until the end of the season for a long 'thorough' process is necessarily the right thing this time around. By all means open up the field, but they should have gauged the interest from key candidates like Kelly already before sacking Scott

If Hirdy is serious about being senior coach at the bombers one day he needs to get a gig as an assistant at a club that’s regular flag contenders. If he wants what’s best for the club and thinks he’d be a good senior coach he needs to get out there any make himself undeniably the best senior coach candidate for any club, not just the bombers

@Larryjamieson_ In the immediate term, nothing. Existing investments are grandfathered. Probably weight more investments into Super for the time being but also hope some of the worst of these changes will be reversed soon or at the next election

@aussie_billy @Bomberbuzzer Likely would’ve finished lower in 2018 and 2019 as well without triple S and Shiel. But you’re right, without the right recruitment team we wouldn’t have picked the right players anyway

@play_themeta @Bomberbuzzer Yeah one of the killer things to do is look at the players that went just after the picks we gave GWS for Shiel. Butters and Kozzie Pickett would have been a nice combo 🤦🏼‍♂️ not that Dodoro would have selected them.

Essendon won’t be a contender until we have a few superstars player in their prime. The fact we don’t have one and haven’t drafted one for 15 years is the fault of one person and will take a generation to recover from
