@larissaphillip I used the book Teach Your Child to Read in 100 Easy Lessons. It’s 15 minutes per day and works like a charm.

My friend is secretly teaching her granddaughter (4 or 5 years old) to read, because the parents want to delay her exposure to reading.

1 year ago, I stood in front of this mirror at 605 pounds and decided I was taking my life back.
Today, I stand here at 484.6 lbs. Down over 120.
I have a long way to go to claiming victory. But I look back on this year with pride. And I’m unashamed and unafraid to keep going.

@rastokke I used a direct instruction based book to teach my kids to read after the ‘whole word recognition’ approach and ‘looking to the pictures’ strategies did not work for my child in grade one. The book, Teach Your Child to Read in 100 Easy Lessons, was effective and phonics based.

It’s not parents’ job to teach kids to read (or do math). A school board motion to lobby MB education faculties to teach structured literacy failed. Shouldn't ed faculties be teaching evidence-based methods in the first place?winnipegfreepress.com/arts-and-life/…

@MrDanielBuck I used this book with my 4.5 yo and he is now ahead of grade level a few years later. This book is a great resource.

Parents, you don’t need any special degree or training to teach your kid to read
Buy a sequenced phonics book, spend ten minutes a few times a week following its directions, and your kid will learn to read

My daughter is the only reader in her class and it looks like she’s a genius performing a magic trick to the other kids and parents. It was 100 20 minute lessons with her dad at the dinner table using a scripted Direct Instruction program and novel read alouds before bed.
