Design as we've known it for years is officially dead.
First, it was Canva coming to save the everyday person. You could finally put out mediocre marketing collateral with little to no effort, thanks to pre-made graphics and templates. The slop was rampant. Instagram nearly collapsed.
Recently, AI has lowered the bar even further. You can make so many things quickly and easily. It's not great, but it’s just good enough. Good enough for now. Good enough for everyone. Good enough to blend in with everyone else.
The bar has never been lower. You’ll want to stand out but your own efforts with a Claude subscription fall short every time. You’ll respond to every gurus post with “LEARN MORE” and hope they’ll send you the cheat codes. But with a lack of experience and lack of a specific skill you’ll wonder why it looks so off. Or it just looks like everyone else. Because if everyone is mediocre, you’ll be amongst the crowd. And eventually, you’ll be forgotten. Your brand will just be vanilla. And soon enough, you’ll need a human designer to bring it home. You’ll have to stand out.
Design has truly never been this important.
Long live design.

Am I worried AI design tools will mean fewer clients? That the startup founders I work with will vibe-code their own sites and generate visual identity?
yeah, a bit.
But here's the silver lining: my clients won't come to me with nothing anymore. They'll come with a prototype and a brief that says "we launched with this, but it doesn't reflect who we are, it's not really rooted in our positioning, lacks polish, and something is off but we don't know what"
AI got really good at making the thing.
It's still bad at making the right thing.
that's the design work.

”You're not gonna win, there's no fighting AI”
Diplo's take on AI is spot on, and he's ahead of 99% of creatives, across all disciplines
> it's inevitable, and you're dumb if you don't use it
> it's a tool, just like many other things before it
> taste and references matter A LOT
