The fact that Kautsky thought if super imperialism before doesn't mean Lenin isn't correct.

I guess this is my way of agreeing with the gist of @TherynDArnold comments, but making it about more than one man and the received tradition around that man.

I am not an anti-Leninist, but frankly, that is not entirely true. What is true is that you don't get it from Marx and that academic Marxology being used to answer comtemporary questions is cop-out. There are at least four theories of imperialism in Marxism before Lenin's (The imperialism good camp in the 2nd International, Kautsky's, Luxemberg's, Bukharins), and the primary driver of that was even liberals, like John Hobson, saw it coming and Marxists were responding to the same thing. State and Revolution was an attempt to settle the debates around the state in the Second International and its early critics. Even revolutionary defeatism comes from the Zimmerwald statement and is more than just Lenin. None of this, however, is generally represented in Marxology or academic Marxism. Organizational debates emerged from debates within the Second International. But if Academic Marxists don't want to touch Lenin, they even LESS want to deal with the larger social forces that produced the milieu. Marxology AND Leninology are useful for contextualizing the origins of Marxist thought, but neither settles any questions beyond that. Most of us need to grow out of fetishizing or scapegoating of individual communist figures. I had to do this, I used to be a person who thought in terms of these historical lineages until I realized that, frankly, it is not really compatible with being a historical materialist now.

I would argue that he developed the understanding of the state and clarified the DOTP from Marx and Engels' works.
