My first encyclical, I was stuck by the fact that these things need to be *cumulative* - are are no take-backs, each Pope has to accept and build on, or at least reconcile with, what has come before.
So, since it's still the early innings of AI, a certain amount of vagueness is appropriate. Right now 'AI' happens to mean LLMs, which have a particular set of strengths and weaknesses, but that might change in 6 months. (Why don't we argue whether diffusion models have feelings? They certainly understand aesthetics.)
But then he goes on to make some very specific claims (below) about AI, which seem obviously a feature of LLMs and lack imagination of what might come in the future.
I think there will come a day when the Social Doctrine will be extended to include AIs or uploaded humans - even if it's 500 years from now - and it's going to be awkward reckoning with this paragraph.

A lot of the emails I get from founders are now written in a hard-hitting journalistic style. I know they're written by AI, because no founder ever wrote this way before. And once you realize something is written by AI, it's hard not to ignore it.

It always blows my mind that the German architect Walter Gropius who co-designed the (then) PanAm Building in New York was born in 1883.
He was 20 when the Wright brothers did their first flight, 25 when Model T was first produced... And somehow drew this.

This, from Olah, plainly contradicts the encyclical, which confidently asserts that AI does not have, and never will have, “real” thoughts or feelings. It’s disappointing to see Anthropic align itself with a document that violates their own moral and intellectual principles.
