Some misread this as me saying the war was a good idea. It wasn't. I suspect people have a hard time comprehending that the U.S. might actually lose this war and suffer a strategic defeat. They're not thinking through consequences of that defeat which would be disastrous for America and indeed the Western world. I wish this war never happened. There are no easy choices anymore. Iran won't simply let the U.S. go home if they think they're winning. That's not how wars with regional powers end. We then should take some serious war measures and reforms and the United States of America and any allies it can find might manage to achieve a strategic win. Those difficult wartime reforms are the conversation I'd like to start today rather than day 100 or day 200 of the war.

The reason there's a rift between Europe and Russia (I mean apart from the fact that Russia is dropping bombs on Europe) is that Russia doesn't see 90% of Europe as legitimate geopolitical actors. Every door was open in the 90s but Russia is simply deeply offended by the idea that they would sit at a table with the likes of Belgium or Denmark (let alone Poland or the Baltics) as actual equals. Whatever US policy in Europe has been, Americans didn't change the Russian nature.

The irony with all this is that the reason there’s a rift between Europe and Russia is because of US policy. Europe-Russia is a much more natural alliance in many ways than Europe-US. This shit is so tiresome

The boots-on-the-ground part of the US military is a relatively "clean" army. Sure, they have committed many war crimes in the last century, but not really more than any other army at war, if we're being honest, and fewer than many. They have civilized RoE, they don't encourage war crimes institutionally and they even punish war criminals sometimes (when they decide to engage in real dirty work, they usually outsource it). The aerial component, however, has been a pure terror machine since around 1944, both because of embracing terror bombing as strategy and a staggering amount of intelligence failures for what is supposed to be the country with the best intel capabilities in the world.
