The case for decentralization keeps being eloquently made by our dysfunctional politics. We shouldn’t have centralized control of payments just like we shouldn’t haven’t centralized control of our media platforms
Peter Van Valkenburgh@valkenburgh

Yes the weaponization of the payments system is bad. But the real problem isn't bad people doing bad things (that's eternal), it's that the payments system should not be capable of such easy weaponization.

the bZx protocol had probably the worst security posture of any smart contract protocol in history in february 2020, they suffered not one, but two oracle manipulation exploits [1] within a three day period. with the second one coming after the protocol was deemed to be fixed. ~$350k + ~$600k exploited then in september 2020, they had a self-transfer exploit [2] which resulted in a loss of ~$8.1m and if that wasn't already enough damage, in november 2021, a phishing attack on the developer key [3] allowed the attacker to not only drain the protocol TVL, but also dangling user approvals, resulting in a loss of ~$55m!

End of the road for parsec I'm afraid. The market zigged while we zagged a few too many times A little parsec lore for posterity, In early 2020 I started charting uniswap *v1* charts as a side project, this spiraled into a full blown DeFi terminal during DeFi summer and into the 2021 craziness. Our big break was DeFi completely unwinding its insane leverage in 2022, first wonderland, then ohm, then terra, then 3ac/stETH depeg. Lots of firms and traders were using parsec to navigate (and in some cases being the ones getting liquidated!). Post FTX DeFi spot lending leverage never really came back in the same way, it changed, morphed into something we understood less, activity onchain changed hugely in a way that I never fully grokked. We had pockets of life after that, Friendtech (rip), our polymarket election dash that grabbed a few hundred thousand hits in 1 night. But nothing stuck as the ephemerality of crypto crept in (more on this another time). I've made about a thousand mistakes along the way but the team I built was not one of them, a group of hardworking, knowledgable and overall good people with the unwavering @bshee1102 as my right hand from the very early days My vision was for DeFi to reinvent finance and permeate the opaque and gated systems of old, a vision I still hold (perhaps masochistically). Parsec was a part of the very beginning of this and will sadly not be of part of the long journey the industry has left. I'm not going anywhere, will be doing some writing and finding new ways to contribute. Onwards!
parsec@parsec_finance

After 5 years, parsec is shutting down. Not how we wanted our story to end, but we are proud of what we built and the value we provided along the way. We are eternally grateful to those that traversed the ups and downs onchain with us. It was quite the ride 🔭

Preach. I don’t begrudge @steipete. But the deeper issue is that open source lacks both: sustainable incentives and organizations that can scale into real institutions. The scale of @OpenAI is tough to beat and is just as appealing as the comp.
Drew Austin@DrewAustin

I wish the “acquisition” of @openclaw rewarded everyone who contributed to the GitHub and everyone who has used the platform. We’re still not getting distributed ownership and open source biz models right. @steipete built it but it took an army, yet from what it sounds only one will be rewarded. I wish that wasn’t the case. I could be wrong tho.

Wow - MLB used to reward teams to hold the line on arbitration hearings. And you think a "salary cap" is good for baseball or the owner's bottom line?
