Mass Relocation of Stray Dogs Will Trigger Public Health Crisis, Warns Actor-Activist Samyukta Hornad ​Bengaluru Addressing a press conference organized by animal welfare activists and supporters regarding the recent crackdown on stray dogs in #Bengaluru, actress and animal rights activist #SamyuktaHornad warned that the indiscriminate rounding up of community #dogs would lead to severe ecological imbalance and a potential spike in #rabies cases. Samyukta ​Hornad responded to the recent administrative actions following the Supreme Court’s observations on the conflict between humans and #StrayDogs. While acknowledging the authorities' intent to remove animals perceived as threats to children and the elderly, Samyukta Hornad argued that the current approach addresses the symptom rather than the root cause. ​“We are in this situation today because of a problem we created,” Samyukta Hornad stated. She alleged systemic failure and corruption, noting that government funds allocated for the Animal Birth Control (ABC) program have often gone unaccounted for, leaving the stray population unmanaged. Samyukta Hornad painted a grim picture of the current relocation efforts. She pointed out that there are insufficient shelters to house the dogs being captured daily. Cramming animals into inadequate facilities is "unhygienic, unsafe, and absolutely cruel," she said, comparing the confinement to conditions "worse than taking a criminal to jail." The activist highlighted a critical flaw in the mass relocation strategy: mixing unsterilized dogs in confined spaces invariably leads to further breeding, causing the population to rise rather than fall. Furthermore, she warned that the stress and proximity would increase the transmission of rabies, posing a threat to both animal and human lives. Samyukta Hornad also cautioned against the environmental fallout of removing dogs from their territories. She explained that such removal creates a vacuum that invites other issues, such as an increase in the rodent population, which could lead to outbreaks of diseases like the plague. Instead of mass removal, Samyukta Hornad and the gathered activists demanded a humane, systematic solution. She called for: A Proper Census: To determine the exact number of stray dogs. Transparency: Tracking vaccination and sterilization status systematically. Now for the past few days they've started picking up over like thousand dogs and there is not enough space in Bangalore or not enough NGOs that are that have space for so many dogs. Now what happens when you put all these dogs together is they get aggressive, they fight and they probably are not vaccinated and dogs are very territorial. So when you put them together you're actually increasing the charge of a lot of diseases like rabies..."
