The PM spoke on West Asia in the Rajya Sabha this afternoon for about 20 minutes. Like after his statement in the Lok Sabha yesterday, the Opposition was not allowed to seek any clarifications after he had read out his statement in the Rajya Sabha. As expected, it was a prepared text full of self-praise for all that he claims to have accomplished in the last eleven years. There was also some hypocrisy when he called for cooperation from all states whose constitutional rights are continually being trampled upon; when he asked states to protect migrant workers after destroying MGNREGA which had been a lifeline for them during the Covid-19 pandemic; and when he called upon the states to implement the PM Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana which is founded on the National Food Security Act, 2013 that he had opposed as CM.

India has historically positioned itself as a principled voice for sovereignty, non-intervention, and a rules-based international order. However, the Government’s reluctance to clearly articulate its stance on the targeted killing of Iran’s top leadership is a departure from that tradition. Instead of reinforcing India’s role as an independent balancer between Israel, Iran, and the Gulf states, the silence has created ambiguity about India’s strategic autonomy. The price India has to pay today for Modi Ji’s personalised diplomacy.

“When the targeted killing of a foreign leader draws no clear defence of sovereignty or international law from our country, and impartiality is abandoned, it raises serious doubts about the direction and credibility of our foreign policy. Silence, in this instance, is not neutral.” Congress Parliamentary Party Chairperson Smt. Sonia Gandhi ji writes at this critical global juncture, emphasizing that India must stand for sovereignty and peace, and rediscover our moral strength.

The Indian National Congress is deeply concerned about the deteriorating situation in the Middle East following the recent military escalation towards Iran.
