I could see the Waste to wealth concept in action today during a fantastic visit to a Biogas plant set up by the Othakadai Panchayat in Madurai district. The plant processes 2Mt/Day of biodegradable domestic waste. The gas so generated is stored in a baloon and generates power through 15 KVA generator to run the entire operation. The plant is completely run by sanitary workers themselves on a revenue sharing arrangement with the Panchayat. A win win for all. While a lot more needs to be done for better seggregation and further automation to avoid direct contact with waste, it was truly impressive to see the vision of the Panchayat towards circularity. The modal is easily replicable and is an excellent example of local level sustainable initiative towards handling climate change. 👍

The elephant underpass built by Railways in Madukkarai region in Coimbatore is impressive. In a first of its kind excercise from #TNForest Department we are setting up AI enabled surveillance mechanism coupled with Machine learning to stop elephant train collissions on the railway track. The team is installing 12 towers with thermal cameras too to monitor movement of elephants on the railway track. A control room has been set up on the site. The system will generate multiple alerts. Something wonderful is happening in our districts where school children are visiting nurseries set up under the Green Tamil Nadu Mission under a new initiative to bring people and nature closer. They are learning about plant species, what role they play in our ecosystem and how to green our earth. We have so far linked 273 schools to 206 nurseries in all 38 Districts.
