@zenahitz Hannah Arendt noted in the 50’s what is worse today: teachers are trained more in pedagogy than in their content area. The admins too get Ed D’s in the service of an ed machine. As I think @zenahitz says in her book: the joy of learning flows directly into the joy of teaching.

The "doom" of teaching high school is not necessary. Dismantle Common Core, the ed schools, and the outrageously stupid certification programs. Give smart and caring people control over their classrooms and schools. These will become the best jobs left.
Stephen G. Adubato@stephengadubato

Out of my 10 friends who got phds in the humanities in the last few years, only 2 got tenure track jobs. The rest are doomed to teach high school…or adjunct.

The effect of AI is apocalyptic in its original sense: it brings to light the hidden flaws of higher ed, from top to bottom. Terror is a natural reaction to revelation of this kind and scale.
Tyler Austin Harper@Tyler_A_Harper

FWIW I do not disagree with the notion that the higher ed system could collapse or significantly contract in the near term. What AI is doing is pouring gasoline on a series of preexisting structural conditions and institutional problems that were already collapsing the system.

@MichaelMcGetti6 @zenahitz Willful blinkering! I am going to toss that in the convo the next time (and it won’t be a long wait) I hear from a colleague about the value of “critical thinking”!

@proffsee @zenahitz Yes! Thinking is already critical because it is self-critical; adding a layer of "critique" onto it places an external constraint on it. This is willful blinkering.

@MichaelMcGetti6 @zenahitz Well said, my friend!! Back in my undergrad and early grad days I frequently made a distinction between thinking against (debate), thinking with, and thinking as wonder. It is one of the reasons that I dislike “thinking” to be so frequently qualified by “critical.”

@zenahitz Yep. No dialogue in debate, no elenchus, no dialectic, no exploring what "the soul knows through itself" ... and no shame so that the soul might turn to what is better.

To everyone observing Ash Wednesday: God bless you.  In a city of such staggering inequality, let this be a season of reflection, repair, and service. May you have a meaningful Lenten season of prayer, fasting, and spiritual renewal.

One thing that's always been obvious about postliberalism, "tradlife," etc. is that it's actually quite shockingly libertine. They claim they're for order yet routinely yield to their basest instincts. Even when they're not sexually libertine, they embody the works of the flesh from Galatians 5: "hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions." That's the new right, ladies and gentlemen.

These are some of the books on the new Texas state reading list (grades 9–12) 🔥🔥 Yes, students will have to read these in their ENTIRETY. These anchor texts are paired with shorter works, e.g. Odyssey is paired with the David & Goliath story from 1 Samuel. What do you think?

I just got a sneak preview of the new state reading list coming out of Texas and it is absolute 🔥 The 5 million public school students in Texas will now be reading: The Bible, Homer, Sophocles, Dante, Shakespeare, Milton, Austen, Madison, Hamilton, Franklin, Lincoln, Frederick Douglass, Shelley, Poe, Tolstoy, & Tocqueville… This is the revolution America needs.

Banning something--anything--by Plato in a philosophy course is idiotic. In fact, any college or university that's serious about liberal arts education would not let students graduate without having read a significant chunk of Plato. chronicle.com/article/texas-…
