Every teacher I know personally is leaving the profession because students have become unteachable. They don’t read, they don’t talk to each other, they have no curiosity, no passion, no interest in learning. Giving kids unfettered access to screens has ruined a generation.

In 2008, 62% of teachers said they were very satisfied with their job. In 2022, that dropped to 12%. We've got a serious problem brewing in education...

A beautifully written case for why physical textbooks are so much better for learning than the online distractions that have replaced them. From Sophie Winkleman and @drdavidajames spectator.com/article/textbo…

Out of my 10 friends who got phds in the humanities in the last few years, only 2 got tenure track jobs. The rest are doomed to teach high school…or adjunct.

FWIW I do not disagree with the notion that the higher ed system could collapse or significantly contract in the near term. What AI is doing is pouring gasoline on a series of preexisting structural conditions and institutional problems that were already collapsing the system.

The fact that one can get an LLM to put together a cogent-sounding argument in favor of virtually any position has left me feeling cynical about human debate and discourse. That it’s (almost) all a game wholly sealed inside language itself without tether to the world.

Once again I AM DUMBFOUNDED by the way in which editors egregiously omit from Wollstonecraft’s writing *the most religious parts*. In an online version I was hoping to use for my course, this from A Vindication of the Rights of Woman is simply gone: "A Christian has still nobler motives to incite her to preserve her chastity and acquire modesty, for her body has been called the Temple of the living God; of that God who requires more than modesty of mien. His eye searcheth the heart; and let her remember, that if she hopeth to find favour in the sight of purity itself, her chastity must be founded on modesty, and not on worldly prudence; or verily a good reputation will be her only reward; for that awful intercourse, that sacred communion, which virtue establishes between man and his Maker, must give rise to the wish of being pure as he is pure!"

I just got a sneak preview of the new state reading list coming out of Texas and it is absolute 🔥 The 5 million public school students in Texas will now be reading: The Bible, Homer, Sophocles, Dante, Shakespeare, Milton, Austen, Madison, Hamilton, Franklin, Lincoln, Frederick Douglass, Shelley, Poe, Tolstoy, & Tocqueville… This is the revolution America needs.
