@coopercooperco Grand Budapest was his best use of the metanarrative story-within-a-story structure (constrained because it was inspired by Beware of Pity) but in Asteroid City it felt unnecessary. Complexity for the sake of complexity. Nothing connecting the style to the substance.

Takaichi just won. Everything went perfectly for her at this summit. The ultimate fear in Japan was that Trump was going to press her on military support in Iran, and if she refused, turn on Japan the way he’s now lashing out at NATO. Takaichi instead was able to clearly convey that Japan would not be able to participate due to constitutional limitations, and actually got Trump to accept that reasoning.
