Prof. Subinay Dasgupta and I recently published a paper on a 3D topological model which shows a rich phase diagram consisting of six phases. The striking feature is Phase I contains flat band surface states encompassing the whole kx-ky plane.

I'm not gonna lie, the @Meta layoffs are some of the most dystopian I've ever seen. They got told to work from home, they were sent the emails at 4AM in the morning. Those who weren't impacted have software on their computer that tracks their every move, preparing AI to take their job as well. They're literally training the AI that will eliminate their position as well. Meanwhile, Meta is raking in RECORD PROFITS. I am a massive, unapologetic AI enthusiast. Yet, this is NOT the future I had in mind. I wish for Meta to crash and burn. This is not the way. Literally nobody benefits from this.

NTA is being strengthened. Four senior officers from the Government of India have been posted to NTA — two at Joint Secretary level, who will be designated as Additional Director Generals, and two at Director level. Three specialist leadership positions — CTO, CFO and GM (HR) — have been advertised. 🧵

OK Indian friends: I want a new Bollywood/Tollywood movie to watch. No classics, recent. My knowledge is not deep, but movies I really love are: The Border. Rock On. RRR. (I view Rajamouli as an auteur at the level of Sergio Leone or Quentin Tarantino.) First season of Sacred Games. (The second failed to hold my attention.) Big and stupid is good. Go.

Stop centralized exams. Bring back state level engineering and medical exams. Take the exams in local language. Leaks and coaching mafia in one state is affecting everyone.
Maheshwer Peri@maheshperi

Is anything wrong with SIKAR? We analysed the 2024 data when credible reports emerged about paper leak in Sikar. This is what we found: In 2024, to get into a government medical college, you needed a score of about 650. In Sikar, the percentage of students who scored 650+ was 7.48% as compared to a national average of 1.29%. That is 580% higher. In fact, Sikar claimed 7 % of the total medical seats in India. Assuming that coaching is having an impact on the success rates, we compared Sikar with another coaching hub - Kota and found Sikar results to be twice as good. With identical student volumes at about 27,000 students each, Sikar produced nearly TWICE the number of 650+ scorers (2,037 vs 1,066) at almost double the percentage (7.48% vs 3.93%). So, @careers360 went deeper into the center level success rates. We found some centers in Sikar dramatically outperforming others. One center - Tagore P.G. College, had a success rate of 12.36% (10X of national average). 44 of the 356 students at this center got 650+ and 74 scored 600+ scores. Very unusual concentration in a single center. Another center - Yash Public Sr. Sec. School had a 10.36% success of 650+ scorers. Unusual. Some centers in Sikar were as good as others. For example: Bhartiya Public School had 962 students appear and only 27 crossed 650 marks - a mere 2.81%. Similarly, B.S. Memorial P.G. College had a success rate of 3.12%. We have data. Sikar is outperforming and is an outlier. And some centers within Sikar are influencing this result. The correct thing to do is to examine and investigate the outlier results and come clean. Hope this helps the investigators. @NTA_Exams @EduMinOfIndia @PMOIndia @CBIHeadquarters

Physicists: please consider signing this open letter of support: nottinghamphysics.github.io/Open_Letter/ The University wants to cut a third of academic and related staff from the School of Physics and Astronomy. As well as astronomy & particle cosmology, we also do world-leading research in cold atoms, condensed matter and medical imaging, and were 2nd only to Cambridge across the last 3 REFs.

This is a true story. A professor in India's premier educational engineering institution caught a student cheating in the exams and suspended him. Next day morning, the boys father who was a senior bureaucrat landed at his home and requested that the matter be forgotten and closed. When the requests and pleadings failed, The professor was warned of consequences. The academic that he was, the professor stuck to his guns. The harassment started. Within a week an income tax notice was served on him seeking details of his foreign travels. A few days later, police landed up investigating a house purchased by the professor in his home town. Later the income tax investigated the sources of funds for that home. In the process of scrutiny, they questioned a few more 'source of funds'. For a professor working in a remote corner of India, this was all too much. He contemplated giving it all up and taking another job. The notices, hearings, responses and harassment continued for about 20 months. Luckily the professor was clean. His foreign travel was official. The house was in a new housing society set up by a group of academics. The management was supportive. 'For 20 months, they robbed me of my sleep', says the professor. On prodding if he would take a similar stand again, he painfully says 'I doubt'! If you indeed want to fight corruption, the starting point has to be the source of corruption - the discretionary powers, arbitrariness and their abuse. It is rampant and completely normal. Remove the discretionary powers and 98% honest people will not worry of harassment when they do what is right! @suchetadalal This story is being retold. Our education ecosystem is subsumed by corruption. And it is normal too..

The phases II, III, IV, V also flat band surface states since these are topological nodal line phases. Phase I is a topological insulator phase while Phase VI is a trivial insulator. The link of our paper is iopscience.iop.org/article/10.108…
