A belter of a letter to @DrScottArthur MP regarding @parkrun from the wonderful @mara_yamauchi. Mara does so much to support fairness in sport for women and girls. Despite the abuse she receives for doing this, she remains scrupulously fair & factual. A true icon.

The stats routinely under report participation because far more Parkrunners don't scan their barcodes—and some aren't even registered.

Park run @parkrunUK has been given 5 million of tax payers money, partly to grow female participation, yet they don’t have a female category, only a women’s category they let any man self id into. Bumping down women every week on finishing place list. They have zero ways to show they are growing female participation. By simply adding extra categories everyone could have retained records & sporting integrity, but it’s still choosing to ignore biology, & women & girls rights to fairness

Given that Parkrun isn’t a race, it would be a mistake to switch to rigid classifications and ID/sex tests. It's inclusive for a reason. Two thorough consultations have informed and affirmed the current system. The smart move is to stand by it.

In jumping events males have a 20% advantage over females. That’s huge. This male wouldn’t make the top 100 in the state against other males of the same age. Sex discrimination cheered on by the feckless. It’s shameful the message we are giving young girls who also have dreams

Happy to go with ONS definition re green jobs even if quite wide: “employment in an activity that contributes to protecting or restoring the environment, including those that mitigate or adapt to climate change". On that basis there were 652,000 green jobs in 2024 — up 29% on almost a decade ago. Of course high energy costs have destroyed many more jobs in heavy industry than that over the past decade. But Mr Miliband will have to go some if he’s reach his 1m+ green jobs by 2030. I expect we’ll see some fiddling with the definition!
