I strongly condemn the Centre’s assault on Punjab’s water sovereignty. The amendment just notified to the BBMB recruitment rules opens the critical posts of Member (Irrigation) and Member (Power) to officers from non-stakeholder states. This is a calculated move to erode Punjab’s effective control over the Bhakra-Beas Management Board and its waters.
This fits a clear and dangerous pattern of centralisation. The 2021 Dam Safety Act has already expanded Union dominance over dams located in Punjab. Now, by diluting the composition of the BBMB, the Centre seeks to shift decision-making power away from Punjab’s own institutions.
The @AAPPunjab government’s silence and complete lack of action under Bhagwant Mann raise serious questions about its intentions. The Punjab government must immediately reach out to all concerned stakeholders, prepare a concrete action plan, and approach the Supreme Court to protect our sacred water rights.
