I would be quite happy to see both of them go, but what does this say about the Liberal opposition in the state and in Canberra? The rise of One Nation is a direct response to the view that the Liberals are unelectable. In an undeserved gift to Federal Labor, the anti-ALP vote is now split (though One Nation is now on the slide). The greatest protection that both Jacinta Allan and Anthony Albanese enjoy is the utterly hopeless state of their Liberal opponents.

Peter Varghese just retired - the man who tried to expel me from the University of Queensland for protesting against their ties with the Chinese government. I was on the board of the university at the time as elected student rep so they had to sit through hours of meetings with me while attempting to expel me. I have so many good stories with Varghese. He blew up at me so many times, always calling me a disgrace, shouting at me, trying to intimidate me. For my first ever UQ Senate meeting he convened a full Maoist struggle session against me, going around the table as CEOs and retired judges and senior business figures just berated me one by one. I never even capitulated, never even came close to letting them scare me. I was literally 20 years old and held my own. So funny, he always sought to belittle me and treat me like an idiot even though my activism as one supposed 20 year old idiot ultimately came to existentially threaten his entire career. This was an early indication of my potential. Also one thing I will always remember - when I explained to him in our first meeting that the university’s over reliance on China posed an existential risk given the fact that it was a Marxist Leninist regime, he told me “don’t worry, we’re rebalancing with India.” So smart, how did that work out Peter. Check current polls and let me know. One day I will write a book about my whole battle with UQ and China. I’ve actually got about 60,000 words written.

Australians are working harder for less real. Labour productivity has barely moved and fallen in recent quarters, with multifactor productivity down 0.5% in 2024-25. Per capita incomes have been declining. This isn't bad luck. It's a choice. When we choose not to reform our tax and welfare system, or Workplace law, or planning and education. We are choosing to lower living standards. The numbers prove it.
