It's interesting that Bacillus grows on those weirdo sugars. Had no idea. Malititol and palatinose are used as sugar substitutes - turanose is found in honey.

Not sure useful to anyone (sure wasn't for us!) but dumping into void in case: Have strain w/ H153Y (CAT→TAT) in MalP (maltose‑specific PTS, IICB component) These are the carbon sources it struggled to grow on compared to WT in biolog assays

Iron demand must be intricately linked to ATP status through respiration. Less iron, less ATP. Interesting to consider how cells might manipulate iron availability to regulate ATP capacity.

@ptchivers Mismetallation also implies pathology & would be evolutionarily selected against as a stasis strategy It's complicated for tweet. The short answer is to reduce 1-C flow & shift to metabolic programs that can generate ATP w/less creationof reactive biproducts.

@rosh_ba Yes - be interesting to know if there is any proteomics/activity data in Zn-restriction to see what changes, i.e. preservation of metabolic activity and depletion of central dogma activity via loss of cofactor and/or cooy number.
