@FischerKing64 I put it down to her enjoying drama (she loves talking about other peoples’ health issues & life tragedies). but yeah. it doesn’t sit well with me, and it’s so subtle. hard to pinpoint exactly why. on the surface there’s concern. but underneath is this… happiness… 2/2

@FischerKing64 oh my god. you’re helping me put my finger on something. I have a congenital anomaly in my breast tissue that’s being monitored, so far benign. went out to lunch with my husband & MIL after a recent scan, and she was expressing concern, support — but w/ a kind of eagerness. 1/

When you have a setback - it’s a good idea to look at how people react. Some people will help you, some won’t. But most interesting are the people who express concern, but seem happy about it. Those are the real scoundrels - people to watch closely.

@__MarieTherese_ @hollowearthterf yes. Sontag explains in “Illness as Metaphor” that when divine punishment stops being the go-to explanation for illness (as it was in the ancient world), personal responsibility (aka blaming the ill for their illness) eventually takes its place.

I used to struggle with the Christian doctrine that the misery of pregnancy & childbearing was a punishment exclusive to women for the fall. But, in the absence of that belief, we now have ‘if you experience health effects, it’s your fault mama xx’ & uh that’s exponentially worse
Andrea D. Huberwoman, Ph.D.@thegenesisbl0ck

My unpopular opinion is that if you’re healthy and metabolically aligned, pregnancy shouldn’t feel like the hell it’s made out to be.

@hollowearthterf after seeing someone post on Reddit that both parties should feel like they’re giving 60%, I started trying to do that, and it’s changed my relationship for the better (I’m the woman). my partner was putting in more effort than me before. feels good to (try to) “outdo” him

Okay but the best relationships are the ones where both parties mutually and organically sacrifice for each other. Choosing to be selfish is the valid choice if there is no reciprocity, but women aren't wrong to want for something better than that.
Allie ✞@allie__voss

One thing I’ve had to unlearn is self sacrifice for its own sake No one cares or notices if I save them “the best fork” because that’s a gift I made up in my head You can fill your life with a million sacrifices no one asked you to make, or you can use your favorite fork

@demystifysci @TwinkTheory “seem to be.” have you seen their Instagram posts or that YouTube video from 3 years ago where they’re all interviewed while stripping down to their underwear? the idea that Lindy’s in a “relationship” with this woman is totally unconvincing

@TwinkTheory to be fair this is actually a little different in that the three of them seem to be in a relationship together

I’m like half reading the arc for this book and reading some of the press. She’s a talented writer in a structural sense and clearly intelligent (although very distant from her true emotions and motivations) Mostly what I’m struck by is that in the name of sort of “out libbing them all” these people have recreated some of the most regressive structures that they once railed against- just kinda rebranded them. I fail to see how what happened to her is any different than the “women were supposed to just turn a blind eye to their husbands cheating” days. He treats being “polyamorous” as if it’s a completely immutable part of himself that she must accept. The lib framework is simply weaponized to meet the desires of whoever’s at the helm.

@hollowearthterf I have never felt offended by those words for white people. I don’t want to call them “slurs” because they have no power. they seem silly to me, if anything. mildly bemusing. like… are you trying to… insult me?

If Nick were actually from Mexico and not the US you’d be calling him a white Mexican, but because he’s American you insist that this blue eyed pale skinned person is somehow brown

When you tell a woman she must pretend a man is a woman, you’re asserting the right to control her speech and perception of reality, while also trivialising and devaluing her female-specific experience. You’re asking her to agree that ‘woman’ is a concept men can embody at will.
Benjamin Ryan@benryanwriter

Misgendering is cruel and rude, no matter how many edge cases or straw man arguments people can come up with to try to assert otherwise.

@XXRealista @pluginmaybe @thefempire50 @BBCWomansHour absolutely. they should respect others’ needs and wishes, follow the rules, and obey the law. they caused this ENTIRE problem by overstepping others’ boundaries, intruding into women’s spaces, and trying to define “woman” out of existence

@pluginmaybe @thefempire50 @BBCWomansHour Rather sexist to view asking for men to follow the law as “demanding”. Somewhat akin to victim blaming. The trans community are also part of society, and therefore should obey the law and rules.

Last week, the UK Supreme Court ruled that the legal definition of a woman should be based on biological sex. Susan Smith from For Women Scotland, who brought the case, joins Clare McDonnell to discuss.

@pluginmaybe @thefempire50 @BBCWomansHour this is all about the rights, privacy, dignity, comfort, and safety of WOMEN. your language centers the tiny minority of MEN who identify as trans: women are “demanding they use different facilities.” no. women are demanding that OUR facilities are respected
