I remember the first time I heard “prejudice plus power.” It was 2014 and I was at a bar with some friends. I was talking to a POC girl and I forget the context but I had called something that happened to a white person by a black person as racist. “Black people can’t be racist.” “What do you mean? Of course they can.” “Black people don’t have power, racism is prejudice plus power.” “What if I was in an all black neighborhood and a gang of them jumped me and called me a cracker?” “But they don’t have institutional power. Racism is systemic.” “What if I was in Africa?” “White people still have the power in the world.” “Ok what do you call prejudice based on race, then?” “It’s just racial prejudice, but it’s not racism.” Yeah so I don’t care. None of us care.

Misgendering is cruel and rude, no matter how many edge cases or straw man arguments people can come up with to try to assert otherwise.
