In 1986, two kids from Petaluma, California, ages 13 and 14, found about $8,000 in cash that their neighbor had thrown out during a police raid. The neighbor was a suspected drug dealer. The boys kept the money.
They stayed one night in a motel, then hired a limousine to San Francisco. There they had steak dinners, played arcade games at Pier 39, bought matching leather jackets, and stayed in a hotel.
Next they flew first class using fake names to Chicago and then Columbus, Ohio. They spent money on hotels, restaurants, rented films, and generous tips.
Five days later they were arrested at the Columbus airport with about $5,000 remaining. The juvenile charges were dropped.
