We need a new terminology for what African countries understand industrialisation to mean. That word doesn’t quite work because it has no development attached to it. All things equal, you should expect the same outcomes for this refinery as happened with Dangote Cement. For instance, after more than 20yrs, no engineering talent has flowed out of Dangote Cement into the wider economy and I’ve not heard of anyone who developed their engineering talent in the group and then went on to set up their manufacturing or engineering concern elsewhere in the country. The entire management of the company is simply hired from elsewhere. When you read this you’ll notice there’s no crossover between the cement concern and this refinery in terms of engineering talent or knowledge scmp.com/news/china/dip…

Unless we get lucky and a pro-U.S. government forms (here's hoping!), the new Iranian regime seems pretty likely to draw two conclusions. 1. Get nukes ASAP. Kim Jong-un has them and is thriving. Saddam, Gaddafi, and Khamenei don't and they aren't doing so well. (1/2)

My issue is simple: I dislike women who focus solely on the negatives of men and the positives of women, and I dislike men who focus solely on the negatives of women, and the positives of men. I don’t like people who think their sex is uniquely good and the opposite sex is uniquely evil. This doesn’t mean you shouldn’t be able to share critical truths about the opposite sex. Unflattering wisdom should not be conveniently hand-waved or dismissed as hate, because it’s uncomfortable to hear. Gripes often do contain real kernels of truth. Resentments do not happen without cause, nor occur in a vacuum. But if that is your fixation, if your fixation is always on the negatives of your opposite and you are so utterly and totally blind to their beauty to the extent you don’t even think it exists - that says far more about you than it does about them. The ugliness you see in them, is in you. You have stared too long into the abyss, until the abyss stared back into you: and devoured you.
