I tried to reconstruct the story of India's gifting of a baby elephant to Afghanistan in 1973 to tell a larger story about conflict, Kabul, and Indo-Afghan friendship. Huge thanks to the brilliant & thoughtful @haramitheatre, @supriyan, @vikramshah1991& @medhavenkat!

In 1973, Kabul welcomed a very special Indian guest: a baby elephant named Hathi. The rest, as they say–– This week's story is "Hathi," by @r_soup. fiftytwo.in/story/hathi/

conf2023.gdn.int/shashank-srini… Sharing a very well curated photo exhibit on the life and work of Shashank Srinivasan, a hugely energetic, informed and innovative conservation biologist, who I had the privilege of mentoring for a while. Shashank passed away suddenly in April this year, aged just 38. He was working on the cutting edge of using technology to aid in conservation.

This is actually the article that should be circulating on the topic - one based on research, providing its sources, not to mention published years earlier than the piece in @scroll_in, which should be retracted.

Mekong Review
Mekong Review@MekongReview·
After 7 great years, Mekong Review is ending its run under current management. If anyone is interested in acquiring the magazine & keeping the legacy alive, please get in touch. Keep an eye out for our 'Best of' anthology later this year as a thank you to our loyal readers.

Some will have already heard this news, but the @MekongReview has shut down. In a special Vietnam Weekly edition, I spoke to founder Minh Bui Jones about the publication's legacy and his decision to stop. vietnamweekly.substack.com/p/mekong-revie…

Of shikar, Dali, elephants, diplomacy, the Afghan civil war.🧵Our story this week is about the Indian state’s tryst with shikar. Rich westerners loved a good shikar holiday in India. The govt pushed shikar tourism, and Air India even came up with ads to attract these tourists.

In 1996, the Taliban “tried to close the [Kabul] zoo, arguing it was incompatible with Islam. They backed down only after Sher Agha Omar was able to show… that the Prophet himself had kept pets” @r_soup on the Kabul zoo. Let's see what happens this time. fiftytwo.in/story/hathi/
