Just imagine what the manager must be going through. What did he do? He only asked for a death certificate. Has following the law become a crime now? #Banking #Odisha #JituMunda

@RituRathaur This is cruel and heart wrenching. This is not right time to say but I always believe that character of a man comes from within. This is where oppression concept dies. Anyone cane be oppressor. It’s not religion or caste. It’s within you.

💔💔❤️‍🩹 Meet the little daughter of a Brahmin pujari… ⬇️ An innocent 4 year old Brahmin child , happily visiting her grandmother for summer vacation in Nasrapur, Pune but faced brutal deaths at hands of 65 yr old Dalit (Mahar) Bhimrao Kamble Bhimrao lured her, dragged her into a cowshed, stuffed her mouth with cow dung so she cud not screen, brutally raped her, smashed her tiny head with a stone, cut her into pieces and then buried her body under cow dung like trash. This is not a random crime. This is a hate crime. It’s a brutal “hisab chukta” in Ambedkar loving Maharashtra under BJPee rule.

@mychangebook @Scholar_ There is clear proof all over the news that bank asked for death certificate and not dead body. What does bank get by denying his claim? Nothing. The money will be safe in customer account until claimant produces the necessary documents.

@raaz_ndk @Scholar_ x.com/i/status/20502… Bank has simply to guide the customer in the right direction..and not in the direction of digging up grave😑 🤦🤦‍♀️🤦‍♂️ But Bank🏦knows jitu munda does not have enough money to get the documents..rs.19042 /- is not enough. So he acts vague & drives him crazy

@venkata_rayulu @sisupalagarha Why should the Bank 🏦 not tell customer 🤔 how and where to get the required papers 🙄. Why the deathly silence? After all Bank is getting rich on customer money 💰only 🤑 . No? Or is there some other source ?

With deep anguish and urgency bring to the attention of Hon’ble Union Minister of Finance and Corporate Affairs (@nsitharaman) ji about the shocking incident that took place on April 27th at the Malliposi branch of the Odisha Grameen Bank in Kendujhar District. A tribal citizen, Mr. Jitu Munda, was forced to exhume the skeletal remains of his sister and carry them to the bank as proof of her death in order to withdraw his rightful dues. This followed numerous unsuccessful visits to the bank where he received no assistance or clarity from officials. What is even more shocking is the bank’s attempt to justify this inhuman conduct by citing adherence to RBI guidelines. This reflects a disturbing intent by officials to hide behind procedures and abandon the very people they are meant to serve. In a democracy, rules are meant to empower citizens, not humiliate them. This horrifying incident has outraged public sentiment across #Odisha and has also drawn international media attention, including coverage by the New York Post and the BBC. Though isolated, this incident highlights the urgent need for a more humane banking administration, especially in remote tribal areas. Urge Nirmala Sitharaman ji to ensure clear accountability is fixed immediately for this shocking lapse. Also urge you to send a strong signal to all rural banks to guarantee citizen-centric service delivery with empathy and compassion. I am confident that with your compassionate intervention, such inhuman treatment of citizens will not be repeated anywhere else in the country.

@Peoplepower08 It’s not his money you illiterate. You can’t just hand over money in some deceased person’s accout. It should go to the registered nominee or legal heirs.

@jyotsnamohan Yes all is well. Because there is no connection of the incident with any one else. The lack of education of tribals is decades old. We should question why the tribal man didn’t go to school in all these years of independent India.

@NikhilHDE This man looks poor and uneducated, he should've been helped. If he took that step, he was clearly frustrated and some paper pushing was involved. How did they give him the money now after this went viral if he was not a nominee or carrying a death certificate?

His name is Jitu Munda. He is 59 years old. He lives in Dianali village in Keonjhar district, Odisha. Illiterate. Tribal. His elder sister Kalara, was 62. Her husband was gone. Her only child was gone. Jitu was the only person left in the world who belonged to her. On January 26, 2026, Kalara died of a stomach ailment. She left behind one thing. A savings account at the Malliposi branch of Odisha Grameen Bank. Balance Rs 19300. Jitu walked to the bank and asked for it. They said no. He needed a death certificate. Legal heir documents. Paperwork from offices he had never visited in a language he could not read. He told them his sister was dead. They told him to bring the account holder. He went back multiple times over three months. Same answer every time. Not once did anyone offer to help him understand what he needed or where to get it. On April 27, 2026, Jitu went to the graveyard. He dug up his sister's grave. Carried her skeletal remains to the Malliposi branch of Odisha Grameen Bank. Placed her bones outside the entrance. You wanted the account holder. He brought her. The bank called the police. The video went viral within hours. Then the system moved faster than it had in three months. The Chief Minister expressed sorrow and ordered a probe. The Revenue Minister called it a lack of a humanitarian approach. The Tahsildar personally visited Dianali and handed Jitu Rs 19402, including interest. The District Red Cross Fund added Rs 30000. A BJD delegation of five leaders, including two MLAs, drove to Dianali to meet Jitu and question the police role. They sat with him. Expressed concern. Called for accountability. Every politician and everyone who visited Dianali after the video went viral was absent for the three months Jitu walked to that bank alone. The bank issued a statement saying there was no harassment. Jitu arrived drunk and disruptive. That they were only following procedure to protect the funds of a poor tribal woman. The government called it a lack of banking awareness. They blamed the man who could not read for not understanding a system that was never explained to him. Kalara's bones were reburied under police supervision. India has 540 million Jan Dhan accounts. A Direct Benefit Transfer system. A financial inclusion mission that has won international awards. What it did not have was one person in that branch willing to spend ten minutes with a grieving brother. The money took three months of humiliation to deny. It took one day to release once the cameras were watching. Rs 19300. That is what her life savings were worth. That is what it cost him to bury his sister twice.
