Reform UK talks big and promises bigger, but when it comes to the numbers, it always comes up short. The problem with Reform is not just a few dodgy sums. It is a pattern. A mindset that treats the public finances as an afterthought and the public as fools. If you want a stark demonstration of that, look at the manifesto they have put out for the elections in Scotland. They propose sweeping tax cuts, reducing all income tax rates in Scotland so they are 3p lower than in England, Wales, and Northern Ireland, with no credible proposals to pay for it beyond vague references to cutting quangos. The cost of this policy alone would, in their own words, be equivalent to “only 3 per cent” of the Scottish Government’s total budget. For context, the equivalent if extended across the UK would be a cost of around £40bn. But it’s all fine, Reform claims in its manifesto document, because it will all conveniently pay for itself. They say that the tax cuts will generate economic benefits of £8bn over 10 years and “this will easily repay the £2bn up-front cost four times over”. Except, of course, that it isn’t just an up-front cost. It’s an annual cost. A £2bn tax cut for 10 years costs £20bn. Oh dear. This is not complex economics. It is basic maths. @TheIFS has given a damning verdict on the plans, describing the “self-funding” tax cuts as a “mirage created by misunderstanding or misrepresentation of the current devolution settlement and incorrectly comparing cumulative and annual figures”. It’s a Farage mirage. Overall, they say of Reform’s plan: “This is not credible.” We do absolutely have to get taxes down. Under Labour we’ve seen huge tax hikes and they are crippling our economy. But a plan for lower taxes has to be credible. If not, then it will only mean more borrowing and more debt. That is the road Reform would lead us down. And this is the thread that runs through everything Reform does. They make bold claims and promise huge giveaways without doing the deep thinking about how the sums will actually add up. In that sense, they are laughing in the face of the public, believing that disillusionment will paper over the need for economic rigour. A few weeks ago, Reform unveiled a plan to support the hospitality sector. What they did not say was that it would blow a £10bn hole in the public finances, on top of a growing pile of unfunded commitments Reform had already made. They claimed the package would cost £3bn. The real figure is closer to £13bn. That is not a rounding error. It is the equivalent of adding 2p to the basic rate of income tax. It tells you everything you need to know. This is not a serious economic plan. It is fantasy economics that would cost families and businesses across the country. When challenged on the numbers, Reform said their policy had been misrepresented. Their new Treasury spokesman even argued their tax promises were only meant to apply to pubs, not the whole hospitality sector. But their own published policy on their website makes it very clear that the proposed VAT cut clearly applies to the whole of the hospitality sector. The truth is that Reform are simply making things up as they go along. It is laughable to hear Reform claiming to be a fiscally responsible party. Their plans don’t stand up to even the most basic scrutiny. When asked to explain the hospitality black hole in a BBC interview, their chief whip responded: “I’m not interested in the numbers.” That tells you everything. A party that is not interested in the numbers has no business running the economy. The unanswered questions go further. Reform has never clarified which of the £140bn in unfunded promises from the last election still stand. Voters are left to guess what is real, what is rhetorical, and what will quietly disappear. 🧵1/2

Thanks, Matt. You warned me that they’d come at me. They already had come at me. I will not be cowed. They have picked on the wrong person. I will not be bullied. My dad was a very proud @RMTunion assistant general secretary. He would say “do right, fear nobody”. I will.

I know this to be true because Karl rang me about it 6 weeks ago, now it’s out I don’t think I am betraying any confidence. What I said to him then I still believe now. Keep telling the truth but be careful, because when they come for you they really come for you.

I'd just like to say a huge thank you. To all the trolls, bots and foul mouthed people who've called me the 'c' word, a hag, wrinkled, deluded and many more foul things. Your massive engagement with me these last few days has actually made me a few quid on here. All of which I've just donated to Reform. So from Reform and I, a big thank you.

BRITAIN IS BROKEN 🇬🇧
BRITAIN IS BROKEN 🇬🇧@BROKENBRITAIN0·
🚨BREAKING: Rupert Lowe makes a state regarding Restore Britain and the may elections 🇬🇧 Restore Britain statement on the May elections. The Restore Britain team have consulted with hundreds of members all over the country about how we should approach the May elections, considering we have only been officially registered as a political party for twelve days. The elections take place in 36 days. I am going to be entirely honest with you all, unusual for a politician I understand - none of the usual spin or twisting. We are simply not ready to field thousands of qualified candidates - all over England, with Wales and Scotland included. We could. We have had the offers and we certainly have the ability to campaign. But that would be wrong. I am not going to present to the British people thousands of candidates who have not been properly vetted, interviewed or considered. That would be irresponsible and rash. We’ve seen what happens when new parties do that, and the voters get let down. Our priority has been on establishing local branches, we have spoken to hundreds and hundreds of amazing volunteers. Local infrastructure is forming all over Britain. Restore Britain’s small team have done in weeks what it has taken other parties years to achieve. It has been remarkable, and I want to personally thank them. Dozens of local branch meetings have taken place already, with more happening every day. If you haven’t already heard about a local event, you will soon. Please be patient and understand the scale of the logistical task our team are dealing with - almost 20,000 people have volunteered to actively help in every corner of Britain. A national billboard campaign has been running, with hundreds of thousands of leaflets already delivered. 124,000 members. More than the Tories and double the Lib Dems, polling at 8% nationally. It is all history in the making. But to properly process thousands of candidates on top of that is not logistically possible in such a short period of time, and I do not want to be in a position where we have individuals elected who do not understand the important responsibilities of local government. Paper candidates. Those with questionable histories. Opportunist careerists. Individuals who have no interest in working hard. Some even simply after the money. I do not want to present them to the British people. Look at Reform’s track record following its desperation to stand candidates - promising tax cuts, then hiking people’s council tax bills. A staggering 9% in one Reform council. 9%. Families cannot afford it. It is morally wrong, and I want no repeat of it. Let’s learn from their mistakes, not our own. We are going to do this right. Where we stand, we will aim to win. Where we win, we will properly represent those residents. We will put forward the right people, with the right ideas, and the right principles. In Great Yarmouth, my constituency, we have the infrastructure to do that. We have been working on it for many months. We are prepared. There are ten elections in Great Yarmouth - nine county council seats, and one borough council by-election. Those are the only elections we will be contesting in May. The plan is straightforward. Our aim is to sweep away the rotten political establishment. Decimate the Tories, Reform and Labour in Great Yarmouth. Show the rest of the country that it can be done. Set an example. Send a message. Then take that into the rest of 2026, and the elections in 2027 where we will aim to stand qualified candidates in every seat across Britain. Work has already started on this - potential candidates are already being contacted. In the meantime, I need your help. We need your help. Come to Great Yarmouth and help the campaign. The most important day is May 7th. There are also two major action days on April 18th, and May 2nd. I want to see hundreds and hundreds of Restore Britain members descending on Great Yarmouth to help us make history. Teams will be out every single day between April 7th and the election, with a bigger presence out on Saturdays. If you can make one trip to Great Yarmouth between now and the election, that would be sincerely appreciated. Particularly on May 7th. We are running the most professional local election campaign Britain has ever seen, but we need your help. If you are planning to make the trip, please register through the link below so we can track numbers. restorebritain.typeform.com/greatyarmouth We have just over five weeks to make history. To those asking how to vote in their own local election - my advice is this. Examine the options. Look at who has taken the care to explore real local issues that impact your community. Support who you think is best to deliver for your family, your road, your village, your town. Next year, that option will be Restore Britain. But in this one set of elections, we are taking a targeted and concentrated approach. Because restoring Britain starts in Great Yarmouth, then we take it national. That’s the plan. I hope you will help us deliver that. Rupert Lowe

I'm self employed. I've just worked out that I have to charge my customers over £900 per week in order to take home the equivalent yearly wage of someone on the new national minimum wage. So I need to charge over £1,000 per week to be £100 better off than a minimum wage earner. I have 12 individual costs associated with running my one man band business. No holiday pay. No money if I'm off work due to illness or anything else. And this doesn't even take into consideration all the time spent on visiting new customers, pricing work, producing quotes etc, some of which is a complete waste of time when you don't get the work. All time that can't be charged for. This is why, for many self employed people, it's just not worth it any more. I've been self employed for 30 years and it's never been this bad.
