Today was a great day joining my colleagues across @bcedplan and the @ISABC1 in the Anti-Racism Educators Network Summit. 🙏 A big thanks to my fellow presenters, Wendy from @sd43bc, and Dominique from @EquitasIntl for a great day 1 together. #BetterTogether

Read this twice- so you thoroughly understand how residential school survivors; children’s bodies found; MMIWG:2S - are all tied together.

I keep getting asked about what I think reconciliation is. I answer “it’s a small bird caught in a constant torrent of colonizing storms, forever trying to find a small branch of reason on which to weather the conflicting currents of injustice.” Or something like that.

I played Oregon Trail during library computer time & it def ‘normalized’ colonial expansion (benignly called “westward expansion”). What was implicitly being taught? Great thread for SS teachers who are trying to explore erased histories & problematize a grand narrative.

🧵I started my history teaching career in the early 2000s. When I first taught about the "pioneer trails" (as the textbook called them), students would always bring up the computer game Oregon Trail. Here's what I learned then and how I use it today as a teacher educator. 1/6

@SeanCarleton My working group at my school was just starting plans for a DEIJ book club for staff, so I’ll mention this and get back to you! Most likely new school year.

PSA: updating the Canadian passport - which happens regularly - does not erase Canadian history. Neither does removing a problematic statue, changing the name of a school or building etc. That’s not how history works. Sincerely, An actual Canadian historian.

I'm happy to share that I've been selected as a finalist for the Lieutenant Governor’s Historical Writing Awards by the @BCHistoryFed for my book Lessons in Legitimacy. Lots of great writing about British Columbia on this list and I'm grateful to be included.

Was today the first time you learned about Corky Lee? If so, check out his bio on @ZinnEdProject. He was responsible for photographing many important Asian American historical events and we should be teaching his story in every U.S. history class. #Corky_Lee" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">zinnedproject.org/materials/asia… #sschat

Today we remember Harry Belafonte, who introduced Americans to calypso with songs like “Day-O (Banana Boat Song).” A singer with a strong social conscious, he became a civil rights activist and humanitarian early in his career. 📸: s.si.edu/43W5UaJ

Anyone who has spent any time in a K-12 school or college would know that it is very hard to indoctrinate students (it is hard enough just to get them to do their school work 😂). A good read on who is really trying to indoctrinate students... thehill.com/opinion/educat…
