@alexmarvar Yeah... no.
Dams often coincide with active faults that make the necessary topography. However, this was a strike-slip fault largely unaffected by any additional stresses from the reservoir.

We celebrate Waverly J. Person! He was an Army veteran and civil rights activist and coined the Nation’s first black earthquake seismologist. Known by many as "Mr. Earthquake," Waverly helped establish the USGS National Earthquake Information Center. #BlackHistoryMonth

This #DurhamBasin sandstone outcrop in the Duke Forest is a great example of some of the #TriassicBasin sediments we drilled through on Central Campus.
Students will start working on core descriptions soon!

The morning was spent in the field looking at a cross bedded sandstone outcrop ~ 65ft below the drill site.
What we found aligned well with our core sample from the same depth!

A @Duke_Geothermal Do-over.
After drilling down ~20m, Durham Basin sediment collapsed around the drill stem, locking things up.
Drilling resumed today, this time with "telescopic" casing to prevent another downhole collapse.

@Duke_Geothermal Day #2 of drilling!
First core sample- about 30 cm of near surface diabase sill! Some fractured (GOOD for geothermal potential) some really solid (low permeability).
Back at it tomorrow!

@Duke_Geothermal well is spudded!
We hit bedrock at 26.9 feet. Casing and cementing hole now and waiting for water truck.
Tomorrow we start coring to learn more about the #geothermal cooling potential of the Durham Basin!
