@KimberlyTaylor There are technical terms for all that but the 20 degree thing was my takeaway. So I leave mine at 80 or 82 during the day and then lower it at night when the outside temp falls a bit. Helps a little but it doesn’t stay cool inside for long once the sun is up.

What’s the secret to getting AC to actually cool things down when it’s 100 degrees out?

@KimberlyTaylor This week I learned that at peak performance, the best your AC is going to be able to do is bring the temp down about 20 degrees. At our daytime current temps, trying to get your house below 80 is pushing your unit beyond its capabilities.

while i was deep in grief, i was researching brain waves & one thing i learned is that during severe depression/grief, we experience theta waves (which usually occur only before deep sleep) while we are awake. we literally sleepwalk through life due to sadness. just wild.

@shawnabenson @IanRGillespie Are pay bumps negotiations based on seasons vs episodes? Just curious how that differs, if at all, based on the length of a season.

@IanRGillespie I know why they do it that way. But as someone else said, if Netflix batch ordered the last 2 seasons at the same time, they may have been trying to avoid pay bumps.

Well, that's novel. Renewing a show for a 3rd season AFTER you've written and produced it. The Upside Down ain't just in "Stranger Things".

This makes me happy because I enjoy the hell out of this show. But I did wonder if they had filmed all of the seasons already... because there was no discernable aging of the kids despite them being an age where 6 months difference is noticeable, much less years in between.

This name change is so they can get out the “lifetime” access bundle deals HBO made, right? Why else ditch the built-in brand recognition in this medium?

What @Cigna is doing is atrocious and lacks any humanity for the people they insure. The doctors who sign off on these things should be ashamed and barred from practicing medicine. The number ticker @propublica uses in the article is very effective at underscoring this point.

Two years or so, I began an extensive research project into the totalitarian movements of the 1920s and 1930, with a heavy emphasis on Germany and Italy whose totalitarians regimes hailed from the political right. When I started this research project I knew very little about the process by which the National Socialists actually rose to power, this despite holding both a college degree and a PhD in political science. My general knowledge was limited to the major battles of WWII and what was by far the Nazi’s worse crime: the systemic slaughter of 6 million Jews in the Holocaust. With the tail end of the chaos of the Trump Administration and the Republican Party’s attempt to seize power after the 2020 election, what I wanted from my research was to feel better about the durability of democracy in America. Instead, it made me feel worse. MUCH worse. Turns out, how fascism rises is a tale as old as time, and its one that has profound implications for America’s current democratic woes. That means it’s a tale that must be told. This is the first in a series of episodes designed to bring what I’ve learned the past two years to you and hopefully from you, to your friends, relatives, and other associates. To assist with this effort, I’m teaming up with real experts on the Third Reich and on authoritarianism to talk about different aspects of how exactly, the Nazis seized power.
