@0x49fa98 @gfodor If you use a language with good abstractions like Clojure there's less of a point to having AI write the code, since it's fast enough to write the code by hand without having to describe it to Grok (or whatever) and then needing to review & fix bugs.

Has there ever been a field that’s changed as quickly as programming in the last 18 months? The only thing more incomprehensible to me than that I used to hand write code is that there are thousands of programmers still doing it. An insane schism due to the speed of change.

@spandrell4 Unfortunately it was probably a shitty quadcopter drone that caused a small fire on the deck or busted out a window. I think we'd be hearing a lot more if it wasn't.

I'm sorry but I'm well read on Mackinder, Mearsheimer, and Morgenthau. And you are... on some X-popularized professor? Please provide your arguments as to why and how Iran is a great power rather than saying "no, you are not". Iran lacks all the proactive elements of a great power, its regional power came as a result of U.S.'s misguided adventurism. It's not even a fully-industrialized country, many parts of Iran don't have proper infrastructure, it lacks the ability to militarily project power beyond its borders using conventional means, it lacks nuclear weapons and thus MAD deterrence, which means it cannot achieve escalation parity with the U.S. or Israel. Iran's regional influence has been ejected from Syria, its hold on Lebanon is in trouble, Yemen is not as stable as one would think, and Iraq not that long ago toyed with turning on the PMF. Bombs have fallen throughout Iran's soil and destroyed infrastructure in the hundreds of billions of dollars, this is all an indictment of the collapse of Iran's regional power since 2024. A great power isn't merely reactive, it can project such power that it is taken seriously in diplomacy. All diplomacy between the U.S. and Iran has essentially been characterized by duplicity, intransigence and maximalist demands from the U.S., this is not a sign that Iran is a great power. Iran orders tons of hardware from Russia, a great power (of lesser scale than China) and gets only about 20% of them, the rest (the game changing stuff) either never comes or come a decade later. None of this would be the case if Iran was a great power, and indeed if Iran was a great power it would be domestically manufacturing more than just missiles and drones; it would have its own indigenous 4th and 5th generation jets and other heavy weaponry. But it doesn't. And it lacks a blue-water navy, which is necessary to defend trade routes and assert its interests abroad. There's literally nothing making Iran a great power and Pape's sensationalist assertion is entirely based on Iran's ability to constrain the Strait of Hormuz. Iran had this ability during the Shah's era as well, and it wasn't a great power then either.

BUYING ALCOHOL FOR ABORIGINALS 🇦🇺 Aboriginals really striking in appearance in person when you meet them for the first time. Very distinctive physiognomies, don’t want to call their look archaic but that is closest descriptor I can think of One thing about having these kinds of facial features is that they make the people look much older than they actually are. Was in Alice Springs in Australia, this is ‘major’ outback town in the Northern Territory. They have a lot of ‘abbos’ milling around in groups here, you walk around and they’re all sprawled out on the grass together. Lots of them aren’t really employed and many get some kind of government grant. Very hard not to stare because if you’ve never seen full-blooded aboriginals in real life before (like I hadn’t up until that point) like I say they’re quite distinctive looking Walking around the town, there’s a group of abbos milling in a park. One of the women comes up to me: [In a very strong bogan Australian accent while repeatedly scratching her face] “Ah yeah hey mate how’s it going mate you alright mate hey I couldn’t trouble you for sam help could I?” Was one of first times and I had spoken to an aboriginal before “What do you need?” “Ah yeah mate well see it’s my birthday mate yah know and ah I was just wondering if you could go in the bottle-o for me and grab us a few stubbies yah know” [scratches face again] Because of her very distinctive facial features was finding it difficult to focus on what she was saying, was looking directly into her eyes, couldn’t really take much in… “Why can’t you go in and buy some drinks for yourself?” “Ah yeah naw well we’re not allowed yah see they don’t let us buy alcohol yah see because they think we’re a right load of miscreants ah yeah but you look like a nice bloke could ya go and do it for me?” “They don’t let you buy alcohol” “Yeah they reckon we’ll start causing all kinds of trouble. Nah it’s not right” [scratches her face again] “If you’re not allowed I don’t want to get in trouble myself buying it for you” “Ah come on mate come on please it’s my birthday ah I just want one little drinkie on my birthday mate” “I don’t know…” “Ah come on mate go on come on mate” [jittering] “I’m not sure” “Mate we’re just chilling out a bit at the park on my birthday just want to unwind it’s no harm mate come on help us out mate” [scratches her face again] “It’s really your birthday?” “Yeahhh” “How old are you? You must be 40 or so right?” Thing is here in my head I thought I was really lowballing it - as I say the facial features they have make them look really old. Genuinely could not tell, had no mental model for it. Thought in reality though she must have been anywhere up to about 60. The weathered skin, the nasolabial folds, the brow ridge… “I’m 18 mate” she replies

@spandrell4 There is no way this is true. It’s good PR by Iran to claim they have though. They’ve signed a temporary ceasefire on the condition of the strait opening, not anything else.

@Yung_Spengler The next card would be securing the coastline with higher costs to the US. They are now targeting IRGC bases with A-10s, near complete air supremacy. Also FWIW, these operations in Iran/Venezuela/Cuba are all to subjugate China (cut off oil)

@TonerousHyus Many people online got suckered into believing AI nonsense, and haven’t put things in perspective. It’s a life or death struggle for the Iranian regime, and they have focused on sending missiles into apartment buildings in Tel Aviv. Makes for good X impressions, but that’s all.
