Fun fact you can do everything you want with just HTML tables and people liked that version of the Internet a lot better

@LeaVerou @Una Custom Element-based icons configurable via CSS would be awesome! If you could put them in <image> props: `custom-element(my-icon);` 🤯

@rajsite @Una Once changing the icon itself via CSS becomes possible, you’ll see how the use cases will creep up. You're currently likely stopping them from even coming up at all because you know it's not possible.

@LeaVerou @Una Yep! Isn't it great! 😸 In practice things that we generally want responsive to CSS (size and color generally) are configurable via CSS custom properties. But absolutely, swapping the whole icon requires HTML changes.

@LeaVerou @Una But once you have that then dependency management is just an es import and they're just components so can be as expressive as you want (attributes, custom properties, more robust content like spinners, multicolor, responsive, etc).

@Una In browser but especially in web views on desktop having popovers can break out of the viewport is still desirable for making productivity tools. It feels like with top-layer and popover api we have more of the primitives to push boundaries there.

@LeaVerou Full inline SVG but as web components (and then custom properties + styles to target SVG DOM)

Should engineers that build the #DesignSystems be part of the same team as the designers or should they be separate teams?

@cory_laviska @sneasio I'd argue not that close, trying to keep combobox and filterable select as distinct concepts due to the Paris, Texas issue: #issuecomment-2864679179" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">github.com/whatwg/html/is…

BLDRcon CFPs are now open! 🚀 The first BLDRcon will be virtual and held March 7th, 2025. The goal of this conference is to give engineers a place to network, build community, and learn about various tools, technologies, and products that can help make their lives easier in production. Because of that, we put together a few rules for the CFPs: 1. No more than 4 slides. 2. Ensure that the majority of the talk is hands-on. 3. Show something that you're excited about! 4. No sponsored talks/paid keynotes. All CFPs are vetted based on the quality of the talk, not the sponsor or how many likes/followers/views you have on your socials. Hands-on talks help engineers who are watching/listening get a better idea of implementation details and the "why" behind it. Here's the CFP link 👉 buff.ly/3DbG6yh ------------------------------------------------------------ If you're interested in sponsoring BLDRcon, there are 2 more slots available, so feel free to reach out. #kubernetes #devops #platformengineering
