#Nepal has seen dramatic political changes in 21st century -Palace massacre in 2001; abolition of Monarchy in 2008; a new Constitution in 2015; but 2026 election has been a tsunami I write for @TheHindu Making Sense of the Political Tsunami in Nepal rakeshsood.in/2026/03/14/mak…

@HappymonJacob If you delude yourself into believing that India needs to be loved and respected for what it is, (and not for what it is worth or brings to the table), then Russia will certainly score better than any Western country. And at present, there is a paucity of such countries

From my latest column in Hindustan Times. If you ask an Indian whether he/she wants to go to the US/Europe or to Russia for studies, tourism, or even to settle down, the answer is not hard to guess: It won’t be Russia. If you ask any Indian strategic thinker whether in the longer run the strategic partnership with Russia is more consequential than that with the US, the considered answer is likely to be “no”.

2/2…highlight how fragile global nuclear order looks today. More usable nukes, more nuclear threats, no arms control, & more countries eyeing nuclear weapons. Can the #nucleartaboo hold in the 21st century and what will it take. I write for @TheHindu thehindu.com/opinion/lead/d…

Trump’s announcement that US was going to resume ‘nuclear testing’ has shaken up the global nuclear order though no one knows if he meant ‘explosive’ testing or systems testing. But it does….1/2 Donald Trump Shakes Up the Global Nuclear Order rakeshsood.in/2025/11/15/don…

A resumption of nuclear testing by U.S. damages the @CTBTO that hasn’t entered into force even after 29 years and now never will, takes the lid off incipient arms race that is already underway, & marks the slow unravelling of global non-proliferation regime I speak with @BDUTT
Mojo Story@themojostory

Trump restarts US nuclear tests after 30 years, citing China & Russia’s buildup. A move that could reignite a global arms race — and test India’s nuclear restraint & “No First Use” policy. Watch In full here: youtube.com/watch?v=YZ4r-Z… @BDUTT in conversation with @rakeshnms

US tariffs on India are not b’coz of trade imbalance or Russia oil purchase, it is b’coz Modi-Trump bromance has soured. But India-US relns are larger & driven by national interest and will survive the ups and downs of the bromance.

India-China relns were frozen after 2020. Thaw began with Kazan meeting btw Modi-Xi in Oct ‘24. But given the boundary question where only disengagement has happened, no deescation and de induction & growing China-Pak security ties, warming up of ties is unlikely. My take
Al Arabiya English@AlArabiya_Eng

How much of #Xi’s rhetoric resonates with #Modi? Rakesh Sood, Former Indian Ambassador, offers his perspective. #GNT @rakeshnms

@ashokkkantha great piece but after the 1988 modus vivendi, did no one point out that the ground reality was changing, to India’s disadvantage! Why did it take Galwan in 2020 when there harehad been Depsang, Chumar and Doklam during the decade?

@SidharthRaimed1 Good piece but there is a change in ground reality. In 1988, Indian GDP was $297 billion and defence budgets $10.6 billion while China’s was $312 billion and $11.2 billion. In 1998, 421 billion and 13 billion against 1 trillion and 24 billion, …1/2

🚨In our latest BLINDSPOT, @SidharthRaimed1 argues that India's warming ties with China amid US tensions isn't new—it's classic multi-alignment. What is different? China's economic coercion + India's vulnerabilities = Risk that tactical maneuvering could become a strategic dependency. Beijing holds the cards to exploit Trump's disruption. In last 15 years, NPCIL has commissioned 2 Russian VVERs (2x1000 MW) and one 700 MW PHWR at Kakrapar. At this rate India won’t reach 20GW by 2047, against goal of 100 GW. rakeshsood.in/2025/07/23/red… I write for @TheHindu
