I am proud and humbled to have been selected as Labour’s candidate for Makerfield. These proud working-class communities represent the very best values of our country and they deserve so much better. It would be my honour to work for them every day, if elected as their MP, to achieve that. Many people here feel Westminster isn’t working for them and they are right. I am standing to change that and get the voice of these communities heard loud and clear. I am glad that this by-election has finally put the places that make up the Makerfield constituency into the national spotlight. They have been neglected by national politics for too long. It is a good thing that all political parties are now on the hook to tell the voters here what they are going to do for them. More than anything, people need life to be more affordable again. As Mayor, I have brought in changes which are helping, such as the £2 fare cap, free bus travel for our 16-18 year-olds and removing the 9.30am restriction from older and disabled people’s bus passes. But there is only so much I can do from Greater Manchester. If elected, I will have a relentless focus on reducing people’s everyday costs and bills and well as securing the investment these communities need. I have been an elected representative in Greater Manchester for 25 years. Throughout that time, I have fought for the people of the North West of England on so many fronts. I am now ready to bring the whole weight of that experience to fighting for the communities of the Makerfield constituency and would be privileged to be given that opportunity.

Anyone who uses 'Northern' as some sort of insult shouldn't be in the Labour Party - we wouldn't even exist without the Trade Union Congress, convened in Manchester to bring together workers from all backgrounds and give them a collective voice.
Viviane: 🌹Labour led by Keir for me@LaindonFEMINIST

I did not vote for Lucy Powell. I wanted Bridget Philipson to be Deputy PM. Over last few months I’ve revised my views positively to Lucy. But that’s all down the drain now. This Northern, left faction of Labour deserve all they get.

Burnham should be allowed to stand in the by-election. He is one of Labour’s best talents and has a proven track record of delivering for communities like Makerfield as Mayor of Greater Manchester. If this goes to a decision of the full NEC, I’ll vote to allow him to stand.

It was the honour of my life to move the Loyal Address -the first Muslim to do so. This moment belongs to the people of Bradford West. Their trust and faith in me made it possible. An opportunity of a lifetime. A privilege I owe to Bradford and to Britain. Full speech 🔽

I analysed the 2023 local election results - this is a real thing: ⬇️Every position lower on the ballot within your party costs you ~1.2 percentage points of vote share. ⬆️Being an incumbent is worth ~1.7 percentage points, so being 2nd instead of 1st wipes out 70% of the incumbancy advantage. 🚻The effect hits men and women equally (Worth noting “Jeffery” is fairly high up the alphabet. DMs open for marriage offers)

Now the dust has settled from the local elections, it's time to talk about vote-rigging. In particular, the way in which a sinister force has been manipulating British democracy in council after council, year after year. That force? The goddamn alphabet. (1/?)

He doesn't even want to be PM. He wants to be Leader of the Opposition while Farage turns the country into a binfire from No. 10, leaving Polanski to tweet endlessly about how awful it is. We can stop all that in its tracks by rejecting the divisive populism of Polanski & Farage.

When I organised @JewishLabour’s conference in 2024, we had to report this woman to the Police for threatening to bomb the venue It made headline news and was reported on by the BBC Why are these people attracted to the Green Party? Why does Polanski welcome their support?

Imagine a white supremacist went on a stabbing spree targeting people of colour in London, but before that, he stabbed his white friend, then jumped on public transport for an hour to head to a multicultural area of the city.

This was a, then still hypothetical scenario, I had concerns about when I was working in the Foreign Office on the UK’s Overseas Territories. There is a need for London to propose a new white paper to strengthen its claim, connection and commitment to the 10 inhabited Overseas Territories currently run with governors. The aim should be to convert them from Overseas Territories into Overseas Kingdoms of the Union with their own MPs in Westminster and with a new start-up ministry to work with them properly like France has with its départements d'outre-mer. If this were already the case, His Majesty would be visiting Washington to see Trump this week as King of the Kingdom of the Falklands.
