One year since the massacre, 1700 killed mostly Druze, 200 thousand displaced, more than 100 remain missing, in large scale violence as a result of the attack of more than 80 thousand governmental and tribal forces according to UN Reports. While accountability remain at Zero.

A large-scale traumatic event does not simply leave psychological scars. It transforms collective identity, alters perceptions of the state and of others, reshapes political aspirations, and redefines what security means for an entire community.

The Druze have never carried a collective memory of a day like this. What we witness today is the birth of one: the memory of a community that not only endured a massacre, but came away with the overwhelming feeling that it had been left to face its fate alone.

« Aboie, sale chien. » Ces mots sont ceux de la base de soutien du gouvernement suprémaciste syrien à l'encontre des Druzes. Dans la culture arabe, traiter quelqu'un de chien est l'une des pires insultes. À travers ces mots, ils continuent de déshumaniser la minorité druze, tout comme ils l'ont fait avec les Alaouites. Hier encore, j'ai reçu pas moins de cinquante commentaires sur X sous mes publications reprenant ces mots. Et il ne s'agit pas seulement de commentateurs anonymes. Parmi eux figure Asya Hesham (image du commentaire), l'une des journalistes les plus en vue en Syrie et soutien assumé des suprémacistes sunnites qui a repris ces mêmes termes. J'ai également vu de nombreux profils de Syriens affichant une résidence en Europe, probablement des réfugiés, qui n'ont aucun problème avec le nouveau régime syrien. Ils soutiennent ses exactions contre les minorités. Le fait d'avoir été l'une des voix de la révolution syrienne, d'avoir probablement le plus publié de textes en français sur la souffrance des Syriens, ne me protège pas de cette haine raciste. Je n'avais qu'un seul espoir : la fin de la souffrance des Syriens, la fin des barils d'explosifs largués sur les écoles et les hôpitaux, la fin du système concentrationnaire mis en place par Assad. Et me voilà aujourd'hui confronté à la haine de ceux pour qui j'ai tout donné pendant près de quatorze ans, simplement parce que je suis druze. Je ne regrette pas d'avoir combattu la tyrannie. Il y a de la déception, le mot est faible, mais ce n'est pas le plus important. Ce qui est en jeu aujourd'hui, c'est l'avenir des Druzes comme celui des Alaouites, qui subissent quotidiennement les exactions des sbires du nouveau régime. Al-Charaa bénéficie d'un soutien international qu'il met à profit pour soumettre les Druzes et les Alaouites. Malgré deux campagnes de nettoyage ethnique, malgré deux rapports onusiens pointant la responsabilité du gouvernement et de son armée dans des crimes pouvant être juridiquement qualifiés de crimes contre l'humanité, il continue d'avancer sans être inquiété. Il est aidé par des influenceurs affublés de la casquette de journalistes ou de chercheurs, qui diffusent un récit idéalisé d'une prétendue première expérience réussie de sortie du djihadisme, alors que sa première année au pouvoir se solde par un bilan de 4 000 à 5 000 morts parmi les Druzes et les Alaouites. Comment rétablir un début d'unité entre les Syriens sans reconnaître les crimes commis contre les minorités, comme ceux commis par Assad ? Comment avancer sans présenter des excuses officielles et sans juger les criminels ? Nous en sommes très loin. Le gouvernement de transition instrumentalise la tragédie vécue par les Syriens sous Assad en rendant les minorités responsables de cette tragédie. Cela permet de justifier leur écrasement. C'est en grande partie pour cette raison que la majorité des Syriens arabes sunnites, au lieu de témoigner leur solidarité aux Druzes et aux Alaouites, continuent de s'en prendre à eux. Dois-je alors me résigner et accepter de me soumettre à un gouvernement qui a décimé ma famille, pillé et brûlé les maisons de mes parents, de mes grands-parents, de mes oncles et de mes tantes, sous les cris de « Aboie, sale chien » ? Non. Tout comme l'ensemble de la communauté druze, qui se voit aujourd'hui menacée comme jamais auparavant dans son histoire.

I have just finished listening to Defiance by @Loubnamrie Few books have left me feeling this moved, this unsettled, and this grateful. Not because they offered perfect answers, but because they preserved the truth in all its imperfections.

Reading it felt, at times, like an act of remembering. A reminder of the losses some feared and tried to avoid, others knowingly embraced, and many never realized they were risking until it was too late. A reminder, too, of the extraordinary courage displayed by ordinary people.

It is the story of a Syrian who hoped, dreamed, rebelled, lost, loved, failed, survived, and painfully carved a path through a suffocating system. Through that deeply personal journey emerges something larger: a portrait of a generation forced into impossible choices.

What makes this memoir remarkable is not only its honesty, but its refusal to simplify. At a time when the Syrian story is so often flattened into neat narratives, heroic verses, political slogans, or the distant gaze of those observing from afar, this book insists on complexity.

From a social science standpoint, the open alignment of prominent journalists, think-tank analysts, and Syria-focused influencers with the narrative of the transitional administration in Damascus is not accidental. It is a political choice. These are largely foreign actors who claim expertise on Syria, yet consistently position themselves alongside power. Their behaviour raises legitimate questions about interests, incentives, and the credibility of their claimed knowledge. Many of them actively rationalise the repression of minorities. They fixate on the alleged failures of Druze, Alawite, and Kurdish actors while deliberately ignoring the structural violence of the current authority: its security architecture, coercive practices, and ideological roots. This obsessive focus on minorities functions as an echo chamber designed to deflect attention from the real issue: the nature of the ruling power itself. This is not analysis. It is complicity. By mobilising their academic, journalistic, and media platforms in service of a single narrative, these actors are not merely biased. They are producing distorted knowledge that legitimises authoritarian rule, destabilises an already exhausted country, and places minorities at heightened risk. What we are witnessing is the emergence of a new, functional orientalism: expertise repurposed to facilitate regional domination. Presenting a Salafi-radical authority as a model of coexistence, despite multiple massacres in a single year, is not scholarship. It is propaganda.
