Many people present this as Indonesia "aligning" itself with the U.S. when at the very same time as Indonesia's Defense Minister was in Washington, President Prabowo was in the Kremlin meeting Putin (en.antaranews.com/news/412121/pr…), quoted with this opening statement: “Your Excellency, I have also come to consult with you as the global geopolitical situation is developing and changing very rapidly.” Which means it looks much more like Indonesia playing the non-aligned playbook, leveraging its position between great powers. This "Major Defense Cooperation Partnership" seems mostly aspirational for now: it says both countries "will explore" co-development of asymmetric capabilities, "pioneering" next-gen defense tech in maritime and autonomous systems, "cooperating on" MRO support. All words high on Pentagon press release energy, low on substance. There's also this other story about a secret deal between Indonesia and the U.S. where Indonesia would grant the U.S. military blanket overflight rights across its entire archipelago (reuters.com/world/asia-pac…). Fascinatingly, this classified document was leaked by The Sunday Guardian (here: sundayguardianlive.com/world/us-seeks…), an Indian media outlet founded by M.J. Akbar, a journalist who became a BJP politician (he served as Minister of State for External Affairs under Modi). This is not a paper that accidentally stumbles onto classified US defense documents about Indonesian airspace. Someone gave them this document, and they published it for a reason (presumably because they don't want the U.S. to have a free air corridor across the Indonesian archipelago any more than Beijing does). The impact of the publication is already disrupting the deal, which was probably the whole point. Indonesia's parliament is already saying that "there is no legal basis that allows for the granting of unlimited free access to national airspace to foreign parties" (antaranews.com/berita/5524735…) and Indonesia's Defense Ministry is in damage control mode, downplaying the document as merely a "preliminary draft" that hasn't been approved (en.tempo.co/read/2097899/i…). Mission accomplished, presumably. So all in all, the actual story is: - Indonesia signed a vague framework with the U.S. that's mostly aspirational - high on PR, low on substance - It collected a photo op with the Pentagon and the Kremlin on the same day - The consequential stuff would have been the overflight deal but it looks like someone wanted it killed badly enough to leak it to Modi-adjacent Indian media - who happily published it and the deal is now compromised. That's where the actual power play happened - and it seems to have worked.
Secretary of War Pete Hegseth@SecWar

It was an honor to host Indonesian Defense Minister @sjafriesjams at the Pentagon today. I was proud to announce that we are elevating our relationship to a Major Defense Cooperation Partnership, in recognition of the strength and potential of our bilateral defense ties.

A common experience: Many brilliant scientists cannot grasp elementary philosophical distinctions. Last night I could not get a colleague to understand the difference between the "hard" (sentience, subjectivity, experience) and "easy" (reportability, information access) senses of "consciousness." Nor the difference between a definition of consciousness and various explanations of consciousness. Hypothesis: scientists tend to equate rigorous thinking with mechanistic explanation, and don't recognize that abstract concepts requires sharp analysis as well.

This is the single best framework I’ve seen for understanding AI. Terence Tao, arguably the smartest mathematician alive, just dropped a paper with Tanya Klowden on arXiv called “Mathematical Methods and Human Thought in the Age of AI.” The core idea: a “Copernican View of Intelligence.” Stop thinking of AI on a line from “dumb” to “superhuman.” That’s the wrong axis entirely. AI excels at BREADTH. Humans excel at DEPTH. Tao himself said AI has made his papers “richer and broader, but not necessarily deeper.” That’s not a limitation. That’s the entire playbook. Stop trying to replace yourself with AI. Start using it to cover the 90% of surface area your brain physically can’t. The people who get this are already 10x more productive. The rest are still arguing about whether AI is “smart enough.” Reframe your point of view from “smarter” to “different”. Human + AI > either alone. The math on that has never been clearer.

Terence Tao proposes what he calls a "Copernican view of intelligence". Instead of buying into the common, one-dimensional narrative that artificial intelligence will simply evolve from "subhuman" to "superhuman" and ultimately make humanity entirely redundant, Tao urges us to look at the bigger picture. Much like the Copernican revolution proved the Earth is not the center of the universe, Tao suggests we need to realize that human intelligence isn't the only, or necessarily the highest, form of intellect. Historically, we have treated other forms of storing or creating knowledge—like animals, books, and computers—as secondary. However, we actually exist within a much richer universe of intelligence. Both human intelligence and computer intelligence possess their own distinct strengths and weaknesses. The true potential lies not in viewing them as direct competitors, but rather in focusing on collaboration. By working together, humans and computers can achieve additional things that neither could accomplish on their own, requiring us to think in much wider terms than just what humans or computers can do alone.

The CEO of Google DeepMind just went on record saying he disagrees with one of the most respected AI researchers in the world. Demis Hassabis, the man behind AlphaFold, AlphaGo, and Google's entire AI operation publicly pushed back against Yann LeCun's claim that large language models are a dead end for artificial intelligence. LeCun, who left Meta earlier this year to start his own AI lab, has been saying for years that LLMs cannot reason, cannot plan, and will never get us to human-level intelligence. Hassabis disagrees, and he said so directly. His position is that scaling laws are still working, foundation models are still getting more capable, and whatever AGI ends up looking like, LLMs will be a central part of it, not something that gets replaced. He does say there is roughly a 50/50 chance that one or two additional breakthroughs will be needed beyond scaling alone, things like better memory, long-term planning, and world models. But the core disagreement with LeCun is clear, Hassabis believes the current architecture is sound and the current path leads somewhere real. Two Nobel-recognized researchers, two founding figures of modern AI, now publicly on opposite sides of the most important technical question in the industry.

Rp28 miliar dana umat dikumpulkan selama 40 tahun raib. Pelakunya mantan kepala cabang bank BUMN sendiri.

On day 1 of my high school history class, our professor got up and said You are 15 or 16 years old. 200 years ago people your age were married, planted crops, had children, and built a cabin by winter. You can do your homework. The bar set for you historically is embarrassingly low. You are not dealing with regional famine or plague. You do not have to save your family from marauders or go into battle to destroy your enemies. You have to sit down and learn from someone who cares about you in a safe, air-conditioned room. You have no excuses.

this tweet shows how out of touch people in tech are. the public barely knows about Stripe, Deel or Rippling. i spent my entire twenties being inspired by many tech billionaires and following their mental models and while career wise i’m glad i did, after the horrors i’ve witnessed in the past 2 years i’ve been truly distancing myself intellectually/spiritually/philosophically from the tech elite school of thought and questioning and redesigning my values and identity. i’ve completely changed social circles and broken friendships because of this and i think it’s important that more people in tech reflect on it. we entered tech to make the world a better place and to equalize opportunities globally. but which tech billionaire is talking about equalizing opportunities today? imo, the public is increasingly hating on tech because tech billionaires who were once inspiring nerds and only focused on building tech that made the world better, started talking about and influencing world affairs ideologically, and the more they did that the clearer it became that they have no understanding of anything outside of their companies, so they had to borrow agendas and views from their nearest smart-sounding and popular person in silicon valley that seemed to understand the world. they ended up adopting agendas that turned out to be alien from agendas of the public and in many cases anti public. this enabled the creation of companies and entire industries that are inherently evil in their use of technology but are suddenly normalized. there’s also an insane amount of hypocrisy, where some tech billionaires say they have value X but when it comes to upholding value X you can tell they clearly have incentives to speak sometimes and shut up some other times despite having all the resources in the world. it’s easier to respect a poor person who keeps silent in the face of injustice than an infinitely resourceful person who (regardless of their view) keeps silent. billionaires can influence government policy but don’t want to be held accountable? that’s a wild, destructive loophole in any political system. the public is smart (contrary to how tech elites often view it) and can respect success that’s result of skill and/or luck but doesn’t infinitely put up with BS
Varunram Ganesh@varunram

It really is understated how much distrust in tech among the general public is caused by Stripe, Gusto, Rippling, Deel, and all the decacorns from the early-mid 2010s hoarding paper gains and (at this point) refusing to IPO at a reasonable time At this point, people outside of tech see tech as a massive casino where their access is gated and everyone inside the casino is making money off them. This will largely be resolved if the tens of thousands of employees working at big decacorns got liquidity and that liquidity flowed back into the economy
