Cornell is hosting a stem-cell cheek swabbing campaign until March 20 across the Ithaca campus. The goal: Inspire 10,000 students, faculty and staff ages 18-35 to spend 30 seconds swabbing themselves to join the national stem cell registry. Cornellians who match with a patient in need could donate stem cells or blood-marrow through @nmdp_org, a nonprofit that facilitates transplants. Donors must be 18-35, making universities ideal places to test for would-be matches. Big Red, Big Impact – the largest such event NMDP has ever hosted – entails swabbing stations across the campus, with an extensive network of volunteers assisting with signups and handing out kits for Cornellians to swab the insides of their own cheeks. People are able to swab themselves at sites ranging from North Campus to Collegetown and Willard Straight Hall. “Cornell is proud to partner with NMDP to drive science, strengthen the national registry and expand opportunities for Max and the thousands of other patients who are awaiting life-saving transplants,” said President Michael I. Just watched the Netflix documentary on the 1980 US Olympic hockey team. I can’t recommend it highly enough. It was a transcendent event for the country, and for longtime hockey fans it was wonderful to see the sports’ profile elevated. USA Hockey flourishes as a direct result.

Last week’s @NatureMedicine paper on #PancreaticCancer detection using #AI (PANDA) was an impressive consortium of academic centers providing thousands of images, but also included DAMO Academy (Alibaba group’s technology research enterprise) as a collaborator. DAMO helped design the #AI medical imaging interface (IMIUI) that is incorporated into the clinical radiology workflow (see Supplementary figures below). Genetic alterations lie at the heart of cancer development, but scientists may have been overlooking a powerful driver of these changes – the everyday nutrients that feed our cells. “Most efforts have focused on known carcinogens, like tobacco smoke or radiation,” said John Blenis, the Anna-Maria and Stephen Kellen Professor in Cancer Research in pharmacology at @WeillCornell. “But metabolism has been largely unexplored in this context.” Recently, his lab discovered that low levels of folate, a B vitamin essential for cell growth, can trigger specific genetic changes found in several human cancers, including lung tumors. “Researchers have known about these genetic changes for many years, but no one knew what caused them,” said Guillermo Burgos Barragan, instructor in pharmacology, who is co-leading this project. “Our data suggests that folate deficiency is a major contributor to lung cancer development and progression.” More at news.cornell.edu/stories/2025/1….
