@JoyceCarolOates while its style is lifted from human-written work on a sentence-level, over a longer piece of writing it can’t pull off varied syntax, surprise, playfulness, soul, or anything that does make a (good) piece of fiction distinctly human-written

not an expert in AI but if AI assimilates all sorts of writing styles to reassemble into what is called "AI slop" wouldn't whatever it wrote resemble the original?--that is, human writers' work? so, how can anyone readily identity "AI slop" from its models? totally innocent writers' work might be mis-identified as AI given this scenario as the device becomes ever more widely used.
Will Self@wself

"Now Granta, or more precisely the Commonwealth Prize ecosystem with which it is associated, appears to have been fooled by AI-generated prose. The issue is not whether detection software can “prove” machine authorship. The issue is aesthetic. Several readers and editors apparently encountered prose displaying classic LLM characteristics—semantic over-resolution at sentence level, lyrical excess without governing pressure, figurative autonomy detached from structural necessity—and accepted these peculiarities as “voice.”"

@BertWrong idk the first 200 pages shifting characters and timelines etc is what kept me engaged, it’s basically constructed like an algorithm. i think its entertainment far outweighs its difficulty

@raspberrygirl44 I never made that equivalence. It just seems to me like a book that is purposefully maximalist and a high friction read is not ideal for people who have eroded their attention spans. And even if DFW would be on tik tok, he was exceptional and loved reading his whole life

@BertWrong you make a false equivalency between reel-addicts and low intelligence. if dfw were alive he’d have a crippling tiktok addiction

@raspberrygirl44 Yeah, multi page long sentences full of dictionary words are perfect for the attention spans people who watch short form videos all day, okay lol

@exhaustdata yes especially since i initially figured it out with zero ai detectors besides my brain. it was twitter tech bros who started spamming all the pangram scores

of course, people need to get a better sense of what “reading like ai” actually means. but if your writing is formulaic and hollow enough to be mistaken as that of a machine’s, i don’t think you should be off the hook just because you can present a 0% pangram score or whatever

i think “this reads like ai” is a valid critique of any piece of writing whether or not it was actually human-written

growing up i would sneak downstairs for a midnight snack but then i would have sudden visions of catching my dog in humanoid form eating out of the fridge and turning to me slowly and suddenly raising a long index finger to their lips and going shhhhhhh

@BeckyLTuch I was the first to note it. Check the dates of anyone who claims he or she noted or posted about it first, including the professor and Lina on Reddit. Mine came not long after the links were shared. But I'm an African, so...

So the person who initially spotted the AI story is a former executive at Palantir? This is all so weird. I'm starting to think the whole thing is a stunt.

No, you actually weren't I did it on the Commonwealth X post, same day the links to the stories were shared. I even emailed the Commonwealth that same day. Check the date you posted on Reddit and the date I quoted the post and commented on it, which led to a thread.

@Charli3M00r3 also don’t love the implications of training an ai to convincingly recreate the appearance and movements of a child tbh.

maybe because i’m a teacher but the way people talk about kids now is insane. children are a huge and necessary part of the world, they shouldn’t be completely shuttered out from art or replaced by a bunch of baby-talking adults
Amanda Killian@eroscestlavie_x

My least woke opinion is that I think one of Hollywood’s only ethical use cases for AI is the idea of never having to use child actors again, if AI was just a huge Machine that De Ages Stand-Ins So Kids Don’t Have to Act and wasn’t used for anything else I’d be like ok cool

@Charli3M00r3 except that’s a wild overcorrection to a problem that can be solved by more robust child protections on film sets. sadly, children can be abused anywhere, and i don’t think the solution should ever be “let’s replace them with robots”

@Charli3M00r3 most of the abuse comes into play with parents who exploit and profit off their child’s acting career and fail to protect them from the industry. but it is not inherently unethical to cast a child in a film

@Charli3M00r3 which i agree with, but what she’s really referring to is the child celebrity

@raspberrygirl44 I assume the subtext in her post is to avoid exploitation/abuse/etc as is so often the case with child actors
