@davepl1968 Grew up in North Dakota - for the F150 with the 400 V8 we had dual block heaters; eventually converted it to propane because that stuff would fire instantly no matter how cold.

Do you know what this is? Growing up in the -40 winters, Dad drove a '68 GMC with a manual choke on the dash as pictured. Every crisp winter morning, we'd unplug the block heater, fight with the unbendably cold extension cord, and then remove the Zenith TV blanket from the windshield that he had placed there the night before to prevent frost buildup. Easier than scraping. When it was time to start the truck, you'd pump the accelerator twice to prime the carb. Then you'd pull the choke all the way out with your left hand to set it full rich. Then you'd reach and crank the engine with the key, and as soon as it fired, you had to bump in the choke just a little way, lest you "choke" it too much and it stalls. Getting the perfect amount was a function of ambient temperature, humidity, and experience. What you're actually doing is restricting air entry with a mechanical flap over the carb. This causes it to pull more fuel from the metering system and run richer, which is required when the engine is still cold. Fancier trucks used bitmetal springs to automate the choke, but few things worked better than a manual setup when it absolutely, positively had to start.

@rbohlender @USMNTBaldEagle Same here. My daughter started playing, made me rent “Goal,” and I’ve been a Newcastle United fan since.

The average american is so oblivious to the world of soccer. This sport truly doesn't even cross their minds, it's pretty saddening. I was talking to an older guy recently and he was holding a World Cup branded Michelob, so I made a light-hearted joke asking if he was excited for it. He goes "oh have you been watching any of those games" thinking the world cup was already underway. Don't even get me started on trying to explain to people how a USMNT player can play in the MLS, EPL, etc. but also represent the USA in the world cup. Apparently this is too complex for their brains. TLDR: The USMNT has so much work to do to win over the average american

Recently I posted a request on our neighborhood website, asking people not to blast music at the pool this summer. For my next trick, I’m going to tell them that we’re building a micro data center in our backyard and there may be occasional brown-outs, but few actual black-outs.

If we host the World Cup and the world doesn’t come do we get to keep the cup?

Duh. This is why they call it smoked turkey.

Processed meats have officially been classified as Group 1 carcinogens by the International Agency for Research on Cancer, placing them in the same category as tobacco and asbestos in terms of the strength of scientific evidence linking them to cancer. Foods such as bacon, ham, hot dogs, and sausages have been strongly associated with colorectal cancer. Researchers say the risk is largely connected to the way these meats are processed. Methods like curing, smoking, and salting can create harmful compounds including nitrosamines, which may damage DNA over time. Preservatives such as nitrates and nitrites, along with high temperature cooking methods like grilling or frying, can also increase the formation of carcinogenic chemicals. Health experts stress that this does not mean eating a slice of bacon carries the same overall danger as smoking cigarettes, but it does mean the evidence that processed meat can cause cancer is considered conclusive. Many specialists recommend reducing intake of processed meats and choosing alternatives such as fish, beans, or other plant based proteins more often. For people who continue eating red or processed meat, cutting back on portion size and frequency may help lower long term cancer risk and support overall health and longevity. @dieworkwear I remember reading the Sartorialist and having a Google Reader list that scrolled and scrolled. I feel like now I can’t even find non-AI pictures on Pinterest. Where are the blogs?! Where are the creators for the art of it?! Everything is so monetized, and poorly at that.

terrible. 20 yrs ago, the internet was full of hobbyist blogs and forums. over time, these have been replaced by paywalled substacks and private discord channels, each a walled garden. google's decision to prioritize AI just makes it less likely ppl will create free, public info

I really like my AI. I am absolutely jazzed about my latest project and waiting for my tokens to reset to keep working on it. I am so much more efficient and get to spend my time doing more of what I like and automate grunt work. I guess I don’t quite understand the gloom.
