Decodable texts limit the spelling patterns children confront in their reading while controlled vocabulary limit the numbers of words children are exposed to and tend to provide more repetition of those word to facilitate learning,
Sandy Shepard@readingshep

@ReadingShanahan Can you elaborate on the difference between decodable texts and controlled vocabulary readers?

Because they are all simplifications, they all have the potential to mislead kids or to cause kids to do things in ways that will be unhelpful in the long run. Personally I’d pair decodable texts with controlled vocabulary readers.

@ReadingShanahan I've quite a range of materials available in my practice (lend books for shared reading). Find when I try to provide other options, for parts that they can't sound out they quickly revert to almost random guessing. Which ways of simplifying texts do you also think are good?

Struggling readers who've learned to read by sight words and context/picture cues will find that the strategies they've been using may suddenly fail them by 3rd grade. They need systematic, explicit phonics instruction and connected, decodable text. #CoreAdvocates @achievethecore

For decades many kids haven't been getting the kind of reading instruction that is supported by evidence. Why IS that? #3d0fb28b2e22" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">forbes.com/sites/nataliew…
