@brooks_caedmon Your problem is NAACP v Alabama (1958) and Americans for Prosperity v Bonta (2021). Who an IE group gets their money from has to be a disclosed. Who ANY private donor gets their money from is protected.

@realAJFerate Yes, and even C4s (what people think of as dark money groups) are not required to publicly disclose donor info. Kinda the whole point of the idea here. If you’re involved in lobbying, campaigning, or so on, the public should be able to see who exactly is providing the funding.

The problem here in Oklahoma isn’t the petition process but the dark money that’s flowing into the state through various groups. Oklahoma must pass transparency laws that require any nonprofit that’s actively involved in lobbying or campaigning to disclose who’s funding them.

@brooks_caedmon C3s are allowed only a de minimis (about 5%) allowance for lobbying, and actually cannot advocate beyond that 5%. More often, a c3 has an affiliated c4 that conducts any lobbying and political activity.

@realAJFerate This is true, but it is not equally applied to 501(c)(3)s, they can still advocate for or against issues and employ lobbyists while keeping their donors private. Transparency laws should apply equally to any nonprofit that engages in any form of lobbying or campaigning.

Senator Howard is a serious person that I regard. But his opinion piece in @TheOklahoman_ is unserious. To enshrine a restriction on non-candidate speech flies in the face of the First Amendment. The real solution to speech you dislike is more speech that you do like. This is why I have urged the lifting of restrictions on direct candidate contribution limits. I’ve seen it reduce the influence of independent expenditures in other states; it can work here.

@OklahomaDOGE @AdamPughOK I’ve argued at the Election Board several times. I’ve both won and lost there. The Board does everything it can to keep candidates on the ballot; this argument against Pugh will fail.

@TJMarti2 Campaigns are difficult, sometimes you win, sometimes you lose. I’ve been lucky to win more than I’ve lost. But you wouldn’t know since your seat was handed to you by your predecessor and you won by default.
