I would care more about Trump turning on some of the worst people in right-wing media if it weren't so obviously connected with his sudden realization that he has historically screwed the pooch in Iran. As it is, it just feels like a distraction, and a predictable lash-out.

Significant: “April 8 ambush of U.S. diplomats in Baghdad.” That’s an attack by Iran—these militias operate under its direction—targeting U.S. diplomats on the first day of an alleged ceasefire with the U.S.

Hard to get too excited about this. Trump spent years elevating these ppl. Now, only after they’ve become inconvenient for him, he denounces them for the crazy things they’ve been saying all along (Brigitte Macron is a man, Sandy Hook was a false flag, etc.). Like the Epstein mythology, these characters are the predictable monsters of his own making. Maybe Trump’s divorce from the podcasterati would be worth celebrating if he actually prosecuted the war well, but he didn’t.
Yashar Ali 🐘@yashar

President Trump goes after Tucker Carlson, Megyn Kelly, Candace Owens, and Alex Jones hard. Among other things, he defends Brigitte Macron (remember, he tried to get Owens to stop her attacks on Macron) and says that she is more attractive than Candace, and that he hopes Candace loses a lot of money due to Macron’s lawsuit against her. He also celebrates the fact that Jones was bankrupted in lawsuits brought by families of victims of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting and says Jones’s conspiracy theories about them were “horrendous.”

I'm glad the Gulf States have been at the forefront here, but it's quite shameful that so many others who make a big stink about the importance of international law aren't. Iran's actions to close the Strait strike at the very heart of international law, going back centuries.
UAE Mission to the UN@UAEMissionToUN

Freedom of navigation is a right for all under international law — not a privilege Iran can grant or withhold. The UAE 🇦🇪 will continue to engage in global efforts to ensure the Strait of Hormuz opens fully, unconditionally, and without restriction. linkedin.com/posts/dr-sulta…

This is correct. Bibi did drop the ball. But irrespective of the circumstances that led to this moment, it is worth remembering that it is in Israel’s interest to make peace with Lebanon. Israel is limited in what it can achieve militarily in southern Lebanon. A long-term occupation presents a catch-22: the LAF cannot rein in Hezbollah, yet the longer the IDF remains in Lebanon to do what Beirut cannot, the more it fuels the resentment that enabled Hezbollah’s rise. The Lebanese government has never been this open to amicable relations with Israel. Now is the time to pursue a diplomatic path and strengthen the Lebanese state so that it can free itself from the Iranian influence that continues to draw it back into an endless war that no one wants.
Nadav Pollak@NadavPollak

I advocated for Israel to start negotiations with Lebanon, and I still support it. Israel needed to initiate it weeks ago, but now it appears like the only reason why Israel is doing it is because of Iranian pressure over the US that in turn is pressuring Israel. Not a good way to start negotiations. Bibi again dropped the ball here

"Trump has taught the world that he has every quality of the madman except indifference to pain. He likes his wars unilateral, quick, and cheap. He won’t seek consent from Congress; he cannot appeal to public opinion. He just gambles that the war will end before his poll numbers sink too deep. When this latest war of his turned difficult, he panicked." theatlantic.com/ideas/2026/04/…

What's difficult in assessing this is clearly stating what assimilation in the United States actually entails. I'd argue it's a fairly low bar, but it's not always perceived that way. Quite a number of communities maintain distinctiveness within the U.S. and always have.

It’s incredible to watch as the actual government of Lebanon rejects the idea that Iran speaks for them while so many commentators demand that a deal with the regime in Tehran should include decisions about Lebanon.

Iran's control of the Strait of Hormuz cannot stand. But there's no going back to the status quo ante in the Gulf. The U.S. and its allies urgently need a plan for the post-war governance of the Strait of Hormuz. Here's a proposal by me, @RichardHaass, and Philip Zelikow.
