I love Metaplanet, am an investor, but must acknowledge the challenges they face going forward. Having to maintain an income generation bucket creates a drag that other treasury companies don’t have to face. For example, MSTR and ASST immediately convert all incoming capital to BTC and enjoy the accompanying CAGR over time in addition to being able to instantly amplify that BTC. Metaplanet, on the other hand, first has to funnel new capital through its income generation business, which over time is unlikely to beat Bitcoin’s CAGR, and while it is tied up there, can’t be amplified. The regulatory environment is just not conducive to a pure play treasury company in Japan, which is why Metaplanet is branching out into other businesses lines. This was apparent when they couldn’t monetize the short squeeze in the spring 2024 because they had to wait until they could issue new warrants. The team is doing the best they can, but the business has turned into a bit of a Frankenstein to get around all the red tape. They seem to be pivoting towards some combination of a hedge fund, Coinbase, and Strategy. Saylor has said that he will not pursue other businesses lines because they reduce investor confidence and will underperform Bitcoin. Unfortunately for Metaplanet, they can’t take this route, and have to rely on a less efficient BTC accumulation engine which is unlikely to overcome their lower cost of capital. Not to mention, they are unlikely to get through the pref approval process before Bitcoin has its next run, creating a huge opportunity cost. I’ve roughly modeled all this out and will share when it’s more refined.
