Learning #JavaScript feels like: Lesson 1: 1 + 1 = 2 Lesson 2: 2 * 2 = 4 Lesson 3: \pi=\sum_{n=0}^\infty(-1)^n\frac{4}{2n+1}

@Kandula_Dinesh6 Scheduling time for self care just like you schedule a meeting or a work task. If I work long hours I will intentionally plan how I will get things back into balance. Sometimes that is just making time for exercise.

How do you manage work-life balance? It's a serious concern for me. Not able to manage properly.🥲

@matifanger Work on developing a stronger sense of self-worth and confidence. Then you’ll be more comfortable to say what do know and what you don’t know. Tech is such a breadth of information to learn that there’s no way to be an expert in every area.

@jendevca No but I find that most items are more expensive than other stores so I don’t typically shop there.

@suereact Overcoming the imposter syndrome. That constant feeling of “I don’t belong in this space” can make solving problems even harder.

@PresidentPanic After working with several product teams who weren’t technical (but believed they were) I bet your team is so grateful to have you! I have considered technical writing in the future if i ever get to that point.

To those who used to work in software development and decided to switch career paths… what are you doing now and are you happier?

@ticotheps Congrats! That sounds like a really great position for you. There are days I feel so stressed in my position I daydream about taking a jr role somewhere else but there are so many good things about my role I couldn’t give those up.

@reallycoolcoder I made the career switch to COO at a wealth management firm back in Dec 2022. I was hesitant to make the switch at first b/c I really loved my previous remote dev job & I didn’t want to start at the bottom as a “beginner” in a brand new industry (finance) *again*. But it has been ~14 months since I’ve transitioned from tech into finance and honestly—I forgot just how much I love solving hard problems with others in-person! I also feel like my natural leadership gifts & abilities are better utilized in this type of role and work environment.

@ticotheps No just curious to hear people share their stories about when they did. Did you know 70% of developers end up leaving the industry due to poor work environments?

@OhAnnaX Some days I think about it but it’s fleeting. Being promoted to a Sr role so quickly at my first dev job is a big factor. I wasn’t prepared for all the different stressors I would face so early on in my professional development but I can’t imagine leaving the good parts behind.

@reallycoolcoder It’s both a pleasure & a curse that in development you can have numerous “right solutions” to a problem. How long is a piece of string? Stress will build quickly when someone else can solve it “better” or take less time. Are you contemplating a different career path?

@OhAnnaX It does seem like a higher salary is just exchanging one set of problems for another. That’s really great wisdom. Thank you for sharing and I followed to stay in touch.

@reallycoolcoder After a nearly a year out, I am trying to remember that no career is worth being that unhappy. I would rather do anything else and struggle by (financially). Your happiness is more important & you can find another job. If you want to speak more, I’m happy to, give me a dm :)

@OhAnnaX I know how hard some days can feel. I know extreme stress makes me want to escape too and it’s even worse when your brain decides the best solution is taking your own life. I’m so glad you’ve made it through that dark time. 💜💜💜

@reallycoolcoder (Trigger warning suicide) - I tried to end my life, but still it wasn’t enough for me to see how bad it affecting me. I was let go and it’s made it very difficult for me to try to return. (I’m self taught)

@reallycoolcoder I like to think I’m taking “time out” until I find the right employer or become a successful self employed dev; I am doing delivery driving and my mental heath has managed to improve from the nightmare that was my last development role

@_anniebabannie_ I also just recently learned about “golden handcuffs” which could look like giving way too much money to an entry level role so you can work them like a horse knowing they won’t leave bc they’re afraid they won’t be able to replace their income/exercise their equity. That’s a 🚩

Y’all developer salaries make no sense to me. I just saw a job post for a new grad/intern role that STARTS at $180k, which, to be clear, is high, but very rad. But then there are agencies who will pay experienced devs $65k, even in expensive cities. This is *bananas*
