The brutal arrest and initial interrogation of Rudolf Höß (Auschwitz commandant) are detailed in Rupert Butler’s 1983 book Legions of Death. The book quotes British sergeant Bernard Clarke, who led the capture team, describing the events of March 1946. Höß (hiding under the alias “Franz Lang”) was dragged naked from his bunk after his pyjamas were ripped off. The captors used threats to hand him over to the Russians for execution, intimidation of his family (including his wife and children), forced whisky, prying open his eyelids with a service stick, and repeated blows that drew screams. Clarke reportedly bragged about the incident later, noting that Höß’s hair turned white from the ordeal. After several days, Höß gave a coherent statement in which he confessed to gassing millions at Auschwitz. Höß later described the mistreatment in his memoirs (Death Dealer), admitting to torture during his capture.
