What's stopping this? I'm guessing it's nimbyism across governments and locals? I know I lived in a neighborhood near the beach (not on the beach) and did not want multi-family housing built because it would lower the SES of people in the neighborhood. Luxury condo's on the beach wouldn't necessarily have that effect though. They might actually improve things If they were built in a place like mission beach or huntington beach where it's already a little grimey.

What if La Jolla, San Diego looked like Battery Park City, Manhattan? Same coastline. Same ocean views. But instead of a few thousand houses… tens of thousands of homes, walkable streets, and big waterfront parks. Would this be paradise…?

i’m starting to get the feeling that the iranians are not about to surrender unconditionally.

Just unpacking it here. Ukraine is helping us with Iranian drones, resulting from the war we launched against Iran. And we're easing sanctions on Russia because of the oil market fallout from the war we launched against Iran. And Russia is helping Iran with medical aid and intel, in the war we launched against Iran. And Trump is frustrated with Ukraine because it's still at war with Russia.

@ukraine_map US says no boots on the ground. No regime change. Strait closed for a protracted period. Uncomfortable political settlement. Iran procures hypersonic anti-ship missiles from China in the next 5 years to bring conventional parity back so this can't happen again.

the trump administration understood the iranians had the capacity to close the straits of hormuz. this has been scenario planned to death by defense and intel analysts for decades. they were confident it wouldn’t happen because they were convinced (what remained of) the iranian leadership would fold to superior firepower. trump is still saying this (at this week’s g7, among other places). turns out…that confidence was misplaced.
