Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu | Rithika Sri, who was born as R Muthuraj in Salem, and later transitioned and now identifies as a transwoman, has etched history by becoming Tamil Nadu’s first transgender cricket umpire. She says, "In 2019, when I was working in Mohali, I used to watch IPL matches. I had a thought to become an umpire when I was a boy... I was working as an ITI professional in Punjab. During the lockdown period, job opportunities were given only to natives, so I returned to my home town Salem... I contacted Salem District Association Umpire Committee Chairman Jayaraman. He promised that he would give me a chance. That was the beginning of my career as an umpire when I was Muthuraja. At the beginning of her career, I made a lot of errors in umpiring. Many people used to scold me. So I told the Chairman that I was not fit for this job. He encouraged and motivated me to continue the job... I spoke to Jayaraman's wife about my gender. She encouraged me to speak to him about it. I was scared that if I revealed this, I could lose my job and career... But she encouraged me and conveyed this to her husband herself. He sportingly said that when the government encourages giving opportunities to the third gender, then why not me? He assured me that he would give his maximum support to me and encouraged me to undergo surgery... Upon his reference, the current Umpire Committee chairman of CDCA (Coimbatore District Cricket Association), Ramesh, was introduced to me after my transition... Eventually, I was allowed on the ground. The belief that CDCA showed me has given me a chance to umpire in current league matches..."
