I'm talking about for power. Think about it. Astrophage is almost total conversion in its efficiency. You could take just a few of the cells, make them emit their pulses of infrared, and then use that heat and convert it to electricity. You don't have to use it only for thrust, it's pretty much an infinitely dense source of energy. In the book, except for emergency batteries, the astrophage was used for ship power.

Caution spoiler alert! (Both for the book and the movie.) I just watched project Hail Mary in IMAX 70 mm. I'm not sure of the perforation spacing, but it looked good. Very sharp focus; one of the cool things about going to movie theaters in the modern era is you don't have a human doing manual focus. That would drive me crazy as a young man, sometimes I would have to talk to the projectionist to fix the damn focus. So glad those days are over! I could tell that it was shot in 24 frames per second which bugs me but most people are cool with that. I prefer 60 frames per second because then there's far less motion blur. Regarding the book by Andy Weir: I'm not into biology SciFi, I prefer physics/cosmology SciFi, so Andy Weir's books aren't as interesting to me as Niven, Heinlein, Clarke, Pournelle, Eriksen, Harrington, or Colbatch. That having been said, I think Hail Mary was a better book than The Martian. I would probably rate The Martian (book) a B minus and Hail Mary (book) a B+. The movie was long but it was surprisingly effective at telling the story of the book. It was well cast, I liked the acting, the effects were pretty great. There were bits of humor, and a few very touching scenes. Overall it was pretty close to the book within the limits of converting a complicated novel into a 3-hour movie. I was extremely happy that they preserved the happy ending on Erid (the habitable planet of 40 Eridani). The habitat that they built for Dr. Grace was spot on, and the final scene where he's a teacher to a bunch of middle school-equivalent Eridanians was really moving. They glossed over a lot of the evolutionary breeding of the taumoeba, but it was explained enough so that someone who hadn't read the book would still be able to figure out what was going on. They rushed over the part where the taumoeba evolve to get through the Xenonite. The Rocky character was pretty close to what I envisioned it from the book. Very well done, the scenes were Dr. Grace learns the language and builds the translator were pretty spot-on. Some of the joystick scenes where Dr. Grace is flying the spacecraft were a little fake. I don't know why they can't get that kind of stuff right in movies where you don't have artificial gravity and the ability to move in curves through space with a reactionless drive. One major fail was the Hail Mary spacecraft itself, why in the world would you give an interstellar spacecraft giant solar panels? That was just stupid and unnecessary. However, that didn't make the movie any less enjoyable. They also also completely glossed over the efforts that Dr. Grace made to save Rocky after Rocky crashes out of his habitat to save Dr. Grace from the astrophage disaster that set Hail Mary spinning out of control. They handled the flashbacks pretty well, fortunately they left out the part where he remove his catheters. Did a pretty good job of him being captured, drugged and put into a coma after he refused to go on the mission voluntarily. Some of the scenes that they added that weren't in the book a plus. For example, they showed the Eva Stratt viewing the Earth- saving information that was returned in Ringo, George, John and Paul - that was a touching scene. Beatles music plays when the probes are dispatched to Earth. The karaoke scene where Eva shows her softer side and sings during the party was also nice. Speaking of the music; it was good and complimented the scenes, but it's nothing that is super memorable enough to purchase. Overall I would rate it a solid A- as far as science fiction movies go. It stands alone as a movie even if you haven't read the book. Definitely in the top 20 science fiction movies of all time.

@stevecrye @caldodge I don’t mean for thrust. I mean for internal lights/temp control/etc. But if astrophage was being used for power…well, he didn’t have enough for a return flight. Maybe a backup for basic power after astrophage exhausted? Possibly they weren’t extended the entire time. *shrug*

@regular__stormy @caldodge In the book, it didn't have solar panels. The energy derived from astrophage is so incredibly dense that panels would completely unnecessary. Ask your favorite AI about the energy required to get a ship up to 80% the speed of light. Long flimsy panels are structuraly weak.

@stevecrye @caldodge Curious, why wouldn’t you give it solar panels? Wouldn’t the ship be able to gain power without burning astrophage, at least while entering/exiting a system close enough for it to matter? I think astrophage was used only for thrust. No mention of nuclear on board, IIRC. *shrug*

I remember when they first made April O'Neil black; I didn't post about it. At the time, it seemed silly to worry about cartoons when there were so many more important things happening. There have been several remakes of TMNT since then, including the recent Magic: The Gathering set, and she's been black in every single one. A reminder that these things only tend to go in one direction. I've since learned to never give an inch on anything, even if people call you unreasonable, racist, or make fun of you or whatever. Remember what they took from you.

Hello Senator Thune, At 3 AM on Friday, March 27th, in a near-empty chamber, you passed a bill by voice vote that excludes all funding for ICE and CBP. Let me repeat that: voice vote. No roll call. No record of who was there. No accountability. Just you, Barrasso, and a handful of senators shuffling paper in the dead of night while America slept. You could have demanded a recorded vote. You chose not to. You could have held the line for five more days until the House returned. You chose not to. You could have used the same procedural tools Democrats have used against you for 40 days. You chose not to. Instead, you gave Chuck Schumer exactly what he asked for, DHS funding minus immigration enforcement, and called it a win. Then you walked to the cameras and blamed the Democrats. Let's be precise about what you did: 1. You caved to a demand Democrats made on Day 1 of this shutdown. Forty-one days of supposed hardball negotiation, and you settled for their opening offer. 2. You handed them a template. The next time Democrats want to defund any agency — ICE, CBP, or anything else — they now know: just shut down DHS and wait. John Thune will fold at 3 AM. 3. You punted to reconciliation. "Good possibility," you said. Not "we will." Not "guaranteed." Just maybe. Meanwhile, ICE operates on fumes from last year's bill with no certainty of future funding. The precedent you set: You have argued for months that the filibuster is sacrosanct. That the 60-vote threshold protects minority rights. That we cannot bend Senate rules for policy wins. But at 3 AM on Friday, you bent every norm that actually mattered: • Voice vote to avoid accountability • Empty chamber to avoid debate • Midnight deal to avoid scrutiny • Immediate recess to avoid questions You'll bend the rules to avoid a fight. You just won't bend them to win one. What you've actually accomplished: Democrats demanded ICE restrictions. They got ICE defunded. Not reformed. Not restrained. Defunded. And you're out here tweeting about how Democrats are the "Defund the Police" party while you just voted to defund border enforcement at 3 in the morning. The question you should answer: Why did this deal have to happen at 3 AM? Why couldn't it happen at 3 PM, with cameras rolling and every senator on record? You know why. Because you didn't want your voters to see what surrender looks like. Here's my message: We saw it anyway. Stop hiding behind "Democrat obstruction." You're the Majority Leader. You set the schedule. You control the floor. You chose this outcome. Own it.
