One thing the situation in Iran has made crystal clear is that whichever country, regime, group or political ideology, no matter how vile, disgusting or repressive, however many people are massacred or exterminated, as long as they are anti-West, specifically anti-US (and by extension anti-Israel), they will have the unquestioning support of the majority of the liberal left and the entertainment world. The same “progressive left” who happily live in the west, profit from its relative freedoms, yet turn their activism on and off like a switch, or in some cases, even make a living out of it. It is disappointing and exhausting. But grateful to all those who have spoken out. Especially in the comedy community. It takes a lot of guts to do so when everyone around you is looking the other way.

I have had conversations with senior members of Pakistan's law enforcement agencies. Their position is as follows: There already exists a Pakistan Prisoner Transfer Treaty with the UK, which was agreed in 2018. Not once has the UK government invoked it. They deplore the abuse of children. Until recently the punishment for paedophilia in Pakistan was the death penalty. Any deportees from the UK would be at leisure to repent in less than comfortable Pakistani prisons where fellow prisoners will not take kindly to them. They think the UK has lost the plot with the ECHR, protecting criminals rather than victims. They would gladly take back any and all Pakistani nationals who have committed a crime in the UK BUT Not a SINGLE application has been made to the Pakistani authorities. The fault lies in our immigration policy and our failure properly to prosecute and punish criminals. Unless and until the UK government seeks deportations to Pakistan, there is nothing Pakistani authorities can do to ameliorate the problem.

Let us never forget this fundamental truth: The state has no source of money other than the money people earn themselves. If the state wishes to spend more, it can do so only by borrowing your savings or by taxing you more. And it is no good thinking that someone else will pay—that "someone else" is you. There is no such thing as public money, there is only taxpayers' money. Prosperity won't come by inventing more and more lavish public expenditure programs. You don't grow richer by ordering another chequebook from the bank. No nation ever grew more prosperous by taxing its citizens beyond their capacity to pay. We have a duty to make sure that every penny piece we raise in taxation is spent wisely and well.
