I'm thrilled to be moderating a panel at the Boston Book Festival this Saturday, 3:30 pm. We'll discuss "Idea City," a great collection of essays on making Boston more equitable, beautiful and resilient. Come see us at the Boston Architectural College, 951 Boylston Street.

Thrilled to be part of this essential discussion about coastal resilience on Thursday eve. Dorchester is so often ignored when we talk about Boston's waterfront, but so much is happening on these shores. RSVP for this stellar panel here! eventbrite.com/e/advancing-re…

@NPRextra @spoggioli1 I toured the khan el khalili bazaar with Sylvia in 1994 when we were both on assignment in Cairo. She bargained like she reported: fairy but fiercely!

The abrupt time change jars us out of our routines and into noticing. We’re suddenly aware of the Earth tilting on its axis, of birdsong at breakfast, of the snowdrops and Lenten roses pushing their way through last year’s mulch, @reneeloth. wbur.org/cognoscenti/20…

Now the're coming for our libraries. In communities from Idaho to Michigan, libraries are threatened by a toxic mix of right-wing grievances. Don't think it can't happen here. My column in @globeopinion: bit.ly/3Fcosst

@jonchesto @FortPointer But they made the worst early “laptop” portable computers (which I’m old enough to remember. ) TRS something? We called them “Trash 80s.”

@FortPointer Radio Shack's Boston roots are probably why I had a soft spot for this company and covered the last days of disco there even though they were no longer based here. Also, a Boston attorney represented many of the franchisees during the bankruptcy.

Trivia: Radio Shack was founded in Boston in 1921 at 46 Brattle Street (1694-1962), where City Hall Plaza exists today.

@justinleebro @MayorWu @MGMMusicHall And for those who stayed til the end, Nina Simone’s “Feeling Good” (“It’s a new dawn, it’s a new day…”) was another genius selection.

“It’s a new dawn, it’s a new day.” I don’t know how many viewers stuck around for It, but closing Mayor Wu’s state of the city address with Nina Simone’s song tonight was genius.

correction: It is of course $70 billion, not million. The columnist regrets the error.

The GOP vote to strip the IRS of $70 million is a cynical, hypocritical (remember the deficit?) gift to their rich friends. No one really likes paying taxes, but it's what we do as part of the social compact. My column in today's @globeopinion: bostonglobe.com/2023/01/20/opi…

Some say Boston's #lab boom waning, but the frenzy of life science construction is still aggravating the housing crisis. Should biotech developers contribute more to house the workers they employ? My column in today's Globe: bit.ly/3Ojj0Y0

The Boston Common is the nation's oldest public park, meant to be enjoyed by all. A new master plan raises the question: Can the myriad competing users of the park learn to share? @BostonCommonMP My column in the Boston Globe: bit.ly/3UvlQuK

Newspapers nationwide are dropping endorsements, for fear they can alienate readers. But I ran an editorial page for 9 years and can attest to their civic importance. I wrote this for WBUR's Cognoscenti: wbur.fm/3NrkuPI
